"We Can Make It Better" and "Is That the Thanks I Get" are actually the same song; the latter seems to be the preferred title. It appeared on Jeff's solo DVD, was played by the full band on Conan, and it's been a staple of the band's live show for many months now, but I'm not sure it'll make the album cut. Here's an excerpt from a recent Tweedy interview with a blog:

I wrote it for Solomon Burke but I didn?t get it to them on time to be on that last record that he did with Joe Henry, so I started playing it cause I kind of liked it and it ended up being in the movie and Wilco started playing it too at some point. We?ve recorded it but I don?t know if it?ll be on the next record or not, but it ended up being on the DVD which is kind of nice, I guess."


EDIT: On January 19, Jeff announced to the Tulsa crowd that "Is That the Thanks I Get" did not make the cut.

It's also likely that the so-called "title track" and "Lullaby for Rafters and Dreams" are the same song, since "Lullaby" contains the lyric "sky blue sky." If they are different, then we haven't yet heard "Sky Blue Sky."

"Lullaby" is also my favorite of all the new songs Jeff and/or Wilco have been playing for the last year. (As far as I know, it's primarily been part of Tweedy solo shows, and if I remember correctly, it was actually originally written by Tweedy for a short film, but not performed by him.) I don't think "On and On and On" is a legitimate album contender, since the band stopped playing it ages ago--and it's quite dreadful.

Last I heard, the recording is finished and the mixing is now being finalized. From the band's official site:

The band are in the final stretch on the new record, which they're calling "Sky Blue Sky". It's scheduled for worldwide release (Nonesuch Records) on 15 May. Some of the 18+ plus tracks recorded and being considered for inclusion are "Impossible Germany", "Shake it Off", "Glad it's Over", "Side with the Seeds", "Walken" and "Either Way". Watch this space for more updates and maybe even some music soon(ish). Oh, and per the press release, it's the first studio record with the sextet lineup that was heard on the 2-cd live set Kicking Television.


This is the first I've heard of "Glad It's Over," unless it's a new title for a familiar song like "Let's Fight!" Interesting, too, that the official site is referring to "Walken" as "Walken," since it's widely assumed that's just the nickname for "Talking To Myself About You," which is about walkin', not Christopher. At any rate, the shorter "Walken" is a much cooler name for a very fun tune.

I hope "What Light" makes the cut, since it's one of the strongest new songs in a fairly lethargic crop, in my opinion. I'm also rooting for "Be Patient With Me," which sounds a little too much like a Golden Smog tune, perhaps, but it might fit in with the album's likely "optimistic" tone. It's a fantastic tune, regardless.

On a related note, the new album by The Autumn Defense--side project for Wilco members John Stirratt and Pat Sansone--was released January 16. It features guest Nels Cline, another Wilco member.

Unfortunately, no. The next time Wilco comes anywhere near Houston, though, I'm not missing them under any circumstances.

There are definitely some tracks there that haven't been played live, and it appears that some familiar songs have endured name changes (none more welcome than "Talking To Myself About You" officially becoming the fan-preferred "Walken).

I'm excited to hear the full-band studio versions of "Sky Blue Sky"--even though I liked the old title more--and "Please Be Patient With Me," since they are my favorites of the new songs we've already heard. Both are small-scale tunes, but they are beautiful and melodic in a way that many of new songs aren't. They are poetic rather than merely mellow.

I'm surprised that the awful "On and On and On" made the cut. Here's to faith that the song underwent some major evolution in the studio. Maybe a 15-minute drone at the end of the album? I could get behind that.
