I would just like to announce that after two years of being part of the Flipside Movie Emporium, I have finally bought a Wilco CD (Wilco of course being the official band of Flipside Movie Emporium, being decided of course by me) and would just like to say that YankeeHotelFoxtrot has not left my CD player yet. Why did I not make this purchase sooner?

Welcome to the club. Very Happy

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot was my first Wilco CD. I'd had limited familiarity with them before that (ages ago my Mac came with a couple of MP3s from Being There installed with iTunes), but seeing Chelsea Walls encouraged me to finally buy a Wilco album. Thank you, Ethan Hawke.

Now, of course, you must buy everything else they've released. Everything.

Indeed. YHF is the career highlight so far, but everything is worth having. I've managed to acquire every single album, b-side, demo, etc. I honestly think that my collection is complete. I can't get enough Wilco.

And don't forget about Uncle Tupelo, Loose Fur and Golden Smog.

Hey Michael,

Are you going to see Wilco in Houston April 23?

This week Wilco announced four Chicago additions to the tour schedule, May 4-7. I'm gonna try for May 6.

Also, if you haven't already heard, the band is working on a live DVD, with Sam Jones--the director of the YHF documentary I Am Trying to Break Your Heart--helming the project.

I would be, if I hadn't been stupid enough to think it wouldn't sell out (the Verizon Wireless Theater holds over 3,000 people!).

Now that I have the money to spare for a couple of tickets... Evil or Very Mad

I've heard that they might release some tickets at the box office on the day of, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

I know a guy who has/had 2 spares, and was looking for a fan to sell them to for face value. If he's still looking, should I mention your name?

That would great. Thanks.

I e-mailed a guy on the Via Chicago forums (username: coastrat) who posted that he had two spares to sell, but it's been two days and he hasn't replied. If I can't find anyone online, I guess I'll drag a friend down there the day of and hope we get lucky.

Bummer. That's who I was thinking of, too. I sent him a PM on your behalf, so we'll see. He may have already parted with the spares.

This DVD is being filmed over four consecutive nights, May 4-7, at the small, intimate Vic in Chicago. Although the shows sold out in a matter of minutes, I got 4 tickets for Friday, May 6, so maybe my enticing mug will be preserved on this DVD. I will do my best.

Michael, did you end up going to the Houston show?

Three friends and I attended this show last night, and 17 hours later my ears are still ringing. We were standing at the rail directly in front of the right speakers, and my ears were completely wrecked by the time "Poor Places" was through--I'm fairly certain I felt my hair being literally blown back during the distortion (and I hardly have any).

On YHF, "Poor Places" brilliantly transitions into the quiet "Reservations," but last night it transitioned into "Spiders," which meant that the band played about 17 straight minutes of over-the-top, intense rock. The energy level on the floor was, for me, unprecedented.

I much prefer the live version of "Kicking Television," and I was glad to hear it Friday. Thing is, every time my wife hears the line "stop buying things," she looks at me and says, "He's talking about you, you know." Last night she tapped me on the shoulder during the line and gave me a knowing smile. Sheesh, just because I spend tens of thousands of dollars every month on CDs, movies, and books... doesn't everyone do that?

Most of you know that Wilco recorded "Just a Kid" for the Spongebob Squarepants movie soundtrack, and that Jeff Tweedy's son's band, The Blisters (a group not yet in their teens), were on that recording. Wilco has never played that song live--until last night. When the first notes began, the crowd went berserk, as if they had discovered the Wilco Holy Grail. It only got crazier when, halfway through the song, the Blisters joined Wilco on stage. (In fact, most of the night Tweedy's kids were in an opera box, head-banging to dad's music. When Tweedy sang "Muzzle of Bees," he pointed up at his family before crooning, "half of it's you, half is me." Very sweet. As always, he dedicated "I'm the Man Who Loves You" to his wife, but this time he included his kids, too.)

Nels Cline got carried away during "Kingpin" and tried to leap from his amp, only to fall with a thud onto his back. Tweedy, hilariously, played medic and carried him off the stage.

38 "nuthin's" in "Misunderstood," at least by my wife's count.

I've never seen the band perform so well before, and I'm happy that Sam Jones' film crew was there preserving the night for official DVD release. I had a perfect view of the stage, at least when Jones' backside wasn't nudging closer and closer to my nose. (Along with several other cameramen, he fluttered around the stage throughout the night.) While we were standing in line outside, Jones actually stopped to film me; I had to sign a release form and they paid me $1. Pretty sure this mug is gonna end up on the cutting room floor, though.

(Another side note: I was pleased to bump into Derek Phillips, the lead singer of Riviera, which is quickly becoming one of my favorite bands.)

The set list was heavy on AGIB and YHF, but there were a few surprises, especially "Say You Miss Me" from Being There. This seems accurate:

The live, 2-disc CD is scheduled for release on November 1. It is called Kicking Television: Live In Chicago. Here's the tracklist:

CD1:

'Misunderstood'

'Company In My Back'

'The Late Greats'

'Hell Is Chrome'

'Handshake Drugs'

'I Am Trying To Break Your Heart'

'Shot in the Arm'

'At Least That's What You Said'

'Wishful Thinking'

'Jesus, Etc.'

'I'm The Man Who Loves You'

'Kicking Television'

CD2:

'Via Chicago'

'Hummingbird'

'Muzzle Of Bees'

'One By One'

'Airline To Heaven'

'Radio Cure'

'Ashes Of American Flags'

'Heavy Metal Drummer'

'Poor Places'

'Spiders (Kidsmoke)'

'Comment'

Obviously it's heavy on tracks from the last two albums, which makes sense since the 4-day stand at the Vic was technically in support of A Ghost Is Born. The segue from "Poor Places" into "Spiders" is astonishing. I'm fortunate to have heard it in person twice.

The bad news? Rumor has it that the accompanying DVD has been shelved, due to problems with the editing firm hired to handle the video. Hard to say whether the project will be salvaged at some point, but I sure hope so: This current lineup deserves to be visually, officially recorded and released for posterity.
