Again this year Jeff Tweedy agreed to participate in Chicago's Letters to Santa charity auction. Like last year, the winning bidder will receive a private Tweedy solo show in the winner's home, for 30 of the winner's closest friends.

The auction was last night. When it became clear that the auction was attracting huge bids from several parties, Jeff--at the push of his wife, Sue--rushed on stage to announce that he would honor the top three bids with three separate private shows! Thanks to Tweedy's generosity, 90 people have earned my envy--and a quality charity received an unexpected windfall. Sure is easy to be a fan of that man, isn't it?

I had an opportunity to get in with one of the winning groups--they pooled their money--but I just didn't have the resources. I'll have to settle for the stories.

Eric

Maybe somebody can do a live webcast. Smile

Yeah, Tweedy seems like a really good guy.

Tweedy's playing her Saturday night, and considering it's only $20 for all admission, it'd certainly be neat to go to.

But I have to work. Sad

A few nights ago--January 25--he debuted a new Wilco tune, known for now as "Is That the Thanks I Get." It sounds great, much better than the two new songs the full band started playing on the last leg of the tour. Plus, he sings it in his old high key, which has largely been MIA over the last two years. I had assumed that the change in key, and the mellower vocals of AGIB, were related to his nasal surgery a few years back. I was starting to fear whether the old Tweedy voice was gone forever--but it appears that he's found it again, and I couldn't be more thrilled. (I much prefer the old high key of Summerteeth to the low key of A Ghost Is Born.)

The new song is also a return to older songwriting methods. The lyrics are pretty straightforward and avoid obscure wordplays and complicated imagery. It's also got a groove to kill for. Can't wait to hear the full band version.

This week the Minus 5 released a new album, with a few cuts accompanied by Wilco. And next month the Tweedy-Kotche-O'Rourke side project Loose Fur will release their second album. I've heard two tracks, and they sound very cool. (I'm resisting downloading the whole thing, because I like to wait for official release.)

Apparently demos are underway for the next Wilco album, and some recording in LA is planned in the coming months. Hopefully we'll have a new record by the end of 2006.

Nels Cline joined Tweedy for the second encore. Two highlights then occured: "Dash 7," and especially the cover of Neil Young's "Walk On."

Last night (Saturday, April 8th) was the third of these private shows. 37 tunes, with a heavy emphasis on oldies and rarities. Check out the setlist below.

Wish I had been there... but I did get a phone call during the show from someone who was there and wanted to share "Radio King" with me! So that was deeply cool.

My DVD-Recorder has been set for a week already.

I'm also thrilled that Wilco is coming to Milwaukee's Summerfest this year, for the first time since 2003. Festivals are not the ideal way to catch a band--especially not one that largely relies on introspective and obtuse lyrics--but I'll endure all the mooks to hear my favorites. I wouldn't miss Wilco for the world, but I'm also planning to see My Morning Jacket and Guster.

I liked it! In case anyone missed it, someone posted a DivX AVI at RapidShare. Nice.

From Pitchfork:

Quote:
A Tweedy solo live DVD is coming out on Nonesuch later this year. Fugazi's Brendan Canty produced the Christoph Green-directed film (fact: the two also worked together on the Burn to Shine DVD series), which was shot on Tweedy's Northwest U.S. tour back in February.

Yeah, I'll be buying that.

Did any of you Wisconites make it to the Wilco show at Summerfest tonight. I was trying to convince my wife that if we caught a flight out of Birmngham around 6pm that we still could have made it up!!

I'm sure Beltmann did.

BTW, Beltmann, any word on when that new album should be released?

I just received a Wilco HQ newsletter that had this to say:

Quote:
When this tour ends in Florence, Mass. next weekend the guys will scatter for a bit and then reconvene for Lollapalooza on August 6 and then on to further work on their as-yet-unnamed next studio record. We hope to have more info about that this fall... but it's still looking like an early '07 release.
