Never, the only time I've been to a church was during preschool--when we had to walk over once a day.

Going to church doesn't have any correlation to spirituality or faith, in my opinion. Zip. I think it's important to reflect upon the reasons why we choose to go or not--what, exactly, do we gain or give by attending, and are those things truly relevant to our lives, our beliefs, our obligations?

As for me, I do go, but irregularly. There are many personal reasons why I both attend and why I don't go often.

Oh, and if you were wondering I go every weekend. Not ashamed of admitting that.

Do Green Bay Packer games count as church? I think they should if they don't, because then I would be a regular.

Me too.

Yesterday I saw Step Into Liquid, which documents various places where surfing mania exists. The film includes Sheboygan, Wisconsin. (I guess Lake Michigan produces waves large enough there.) The movie also ends with "outtakes," the last one being two of these Sheboygan devotees saying, "We gotta go. It's 3:00 and the Packers are on." Of course the scene got a huge laugh from the audience filled with Wisconsinites.

My wife and I are true Packer faithful, and were fortunate to reside in Green Bay when they won it all in '97. At the time, I was interning at the ABC-TV affiliate in Green Bay, in the Promotions department. That meant that I was able to participate in all kinds of Packer-related stuff, from shoots at Lambeau to meeting various players and their wives. (I remember once trading shaving tips with William Henderson.) It also meant that I worked in the same building that the Mike Holmgren Show was taped at--we always knew when taping started because the building would shake with applause.

Of course there's no shame in that. Faith and its practice is a wonderful thing, as long as it's not confused with a crutch, or used to replace critical thinking.

Weddings and funerals.
