Hey guys, I'm having a hard time explaining Talk To Her to some people who haven't a clue what its trying to say. Anyone have a good, easy way (which is hard) to explain the tie ins between Marco, Lydia, Benigno, and Alicia, the silent films and such. I'm tryingto give them my explanations, interpratations, and studies on the film--but really nothing gets through. Has anyone wrote a piece or anything on their thoughts that would help?

In my A- review of Talk to Her, one of my favorite movies of the year, I said briefly:

"There?s also an unquestionable grace here, and a humbling respect for humanity, the way foolish men and women interact, for better or worse, with one another... People float in and out of each other?s lives, in songs or dances or movies, or in and out of consciousness, or in and out of love, but life itself is one rambling, glorious dream that all of us sometimes sleep through."

Those were just my initial rambling thoughts: basically, I found it to be about love, and I found it to be very optimistic. I thought it suggested that love can be joyous or destructive, or perhaps even both at once: you could look at Benigno as a pervert for having sex with Alicia, or as a savior for waking her from her coma, which was thought impossible. The relationship between Lydia and Marco was painful for both of them, certainly - but it ultimately led to Lydia's reuniting with the male bullfighter (I forget his name), and it led to Marco meeting Benigno, and ultimately to his meeting Alicia, which suggests love for both of them. So very generally I'd say it's a movie about love - love for people, love for the arts (the song that Marco hears at that resort, the dance at the beginning, the silent movie), etc. As much as love sucks, it's the most perfect thing in the world.

Just my thoughts on a wonderful, reassuring movie; I might be wrong.

Matt

Thanks Matt...I've just been trying to gather some information that appeals to the non-art-house friendly. I'm more of an absorber and watcher than a great explainer.
