Anyone interested in renting/buying any of these?

I haven't seen any of this week's releases, but I'm interested in seeing Amen, He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not, Maryam, the Once Upon a Time In China trilogy, Paper Moon, Targets, and This Is Not a Love Song. Any thoughts of any of these? Any movies among those released this week you'd specifically recommend?

EDIT: Actually, I have seen one of this week's releases: Rob Zombie's House of 1000 Corpses.

I've been waiting for Maryam to come out on DVD for quite some time. I plan on picking it up as soon as I can.

I'm intrigued by Amen. and Maryam as well.

I'm a big fan of the first Once Upon a Time in China, which I think ranks as one of the great martial-arts movies, and certainly one of Tsui's best, most enjoyable films, alongside Peking Opera Blues. The two sequels aren't bad, either.

Paper Moon might be my favorite Bogdanovich, comparing favorably to Last Picture Show and The Cat's Meow. (Speaking of Meow... since I use it in class, I've seen it probably a dozen times, and it only grows in stature. What dialogue! What construction! What performances! I show it in an American literature honors course with my "Great Gatsby" unit, because the thematic connections are so clear. I never show the films of the books--what's the point?--but will occasionally show a thematic cousin that lends itself to critical thinking. For example, with "Scarlet Letter" I scheduled Quiz Show. It's hard to justify spending class hours on this, though, so sometimes I make them optional after-school activities. With "Red Badge of Courage" I showed Zhang's Hero, for its ideas about heroism and also its color coding; with "The Crucible" it was The Passion of Joan of Arc; with gothic lit it was Nosferatu.)

I also really like Backbeat, which is about the early days of the Beatles. The film seems widely forgotten now, but I thought it was one of the stronger pictures released in 1994.

I've not once seen a Peter Bogdanovich movie (I rented "The Last Picture Show" once, but there wasn't even any tape in the video) so I can't wait to get out there and watch "Paper Moon" and "Targets." Being a fan of Audrey Tautou, I'll eagerly watch "He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not" also.

The only one I really want to see is He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not. But, I have to admit, I'm intrigued as to why Head of State got all of the positive reviews from everyone ... makes me wonder if people just decided to give Chris Rock a break this time.

That might be part of the reason, but I thought "Head of State" wasn't bad. Better than "Down to Earth," at least. Bleach.

As far as the other releases, I've seen "House of 1000 Corpses," which I actually kinda enjoyed (loved Captain Spaulding), and "The Hunted" which I thought was really good. I've also seen "Gotcha!," "Curse of the Aztec Mummy," and "Boogeyman 2" but so long ago I can't rightly recall how I felt about them. I'm curious to see the TV movie version of "Carrie," "Die! Die! My Darling!" and the "Once Upon a Time in China" trilogy.

I'm a big fan of kung-fu cinema, and the Once Upon a Time in China trilogy is excellent; the first two especially are probably two of my favorite kung-fu movies. I also love Iron Monkey, Fist of Legend, and The Legend of Drunken Master. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Hero are both superb movies, but I think I would place them in a different category (introspective martial-arts?).

Hey, Michael, do you know any place where I could find a date for Swimming Pool's DVD release (even though it's a bit early)...it's out of the closest art-house theatre around here...so I was wondering if they've got a date on a release yet...can't find it anywhere.

The date hasn't been announced by the studio yet, but VideoETA has it listed as "estimated for November 2003."
