I think everyone around here agrees that films are important historical and cultural documents, but maybe I'm alone in thinking this news is of great signficance. From IMDB:

"A print of Beyond the Rocks, a 1922 silent film starring Rudolph Valentino and Gloria Swanson, and thought to have been extinct, has turned up in Haarlem, the Netherlands, the Amsterdam Film Museum disclosed Saturday. In a statement, the museum said that the film, which was directed by Sam Wood (A Night at the Opera, Goodbye, Mr. Chips, Our Town, Pride of the Yankees), is currently being restored, will be screened during the second Filmmuseum Biennial in April of next year, and will be presented with a new score."

Would this be the cinematic equivalent of when the literary world discovered that Shakespeare was not a loyal husband and has mistress'.

A better analogy might be if the literary world knew about a long lost Shakespeare play, and then found a written copy buried underneath some rocks in London.

Maybe learning the truth about a matinee idol--like, say, Rock Hudson--would better fit your analogy!
