Tagline: A romantic comedy. With zombies.

I'm dying to see it. It's a British romantic comedy heavily inspired by Romero's Dead trilogy, and it's been getting extremely positive word-of-mouth. Even Romero loves it. From a recent interview:

Quote:
GR: I'll tell you one movie that I loved: It's called Shaun of the Dead. Have you seen that?

<snip>

Oh, man. I just flipped! It's British guys who used to do a TV series called Spaced; it's sort of like a mini-Monty Python group. Wonderfully talented, wonderful actors. They just did this with such affection and love. You almost can't call it a send-up even though it is. Let me just say it's not spoofy; it certainly satirizes the genre, but it does it in such an affectionate way that it's just... You've gotta see this movie! It's fabulous. I'm their biggest endorser. I really flipped for it.

Nothing like gushing endorsement from the man himself, eh? I saw the trailer months ago and it looks like a blast. It opened in the UK in April, and it's making its way to U.S. screens in September.

I looking forward to seeing it too. Lots of good word of mouth, and the trailer is damn funny.

I've been interested ever since reading Kim Newman's rather affectionate review in Sight & Sound back in May. Although she described it as "ramshackle in tone and effect, with running jokes that run into the ground," she also called it endearing: "Like Young Frankenstein, it pokes fun at its inspirations but plays by their rules."

One last quote: "An obvious way of parodying the genre is to make the creatures comical, but for the most part the dead here are generic bloody-mouthed fumblers and the laughs come from the binds their presence puts the living characters into... Only in the epilogue are there jokes at the expense of zombies and even those are in line with the satiric jabs of the later Romero films."

Sounds like fun.

Ah, Newman is a dude. Here's a pic of him. (Apparently, "Kim Newman" is a psuedonym anyway. Who knew.)

Has anyone here read Newman's Nightmare Movies? I've been meaning to track down a copy for years.

Yes, I have a copy and highly recommend it. Probably the best book on the horror film I've read. Newman's probably forgotten about more horror movies than I've seen. Nightmare Movies was a conscious effort to pick up where Everson's Classics of the Horror Film left off. It spans from Night of the Living Dead all the way to the early 90s with Re-Animator, and places that era of horror in a post-Vietnam context. It's as much social commentary as film commentary.

My favorite kind. I think I'll pick this up.

Nice interview. Favorite line: "I'm much more concerned or upset with the idea of boxing or bullfighting than I am with the idea of watching thriller killer movies." I'm not sure I'd place the hypocrisy in such either-or terms, but I definitely agree with the sentiment.
