Today I walked into Exclusive (the local record store in West Bend) to buy a CD from the RX Bandits, a fairly well known ska/reggae band. I searched the entire store for any of their CD's but i couldn't find anything. I asked the guy working at the counter if they had any of their music. He told me that they "didn't really stock any of their stuff anymore." Normally this wouldn't have made me that angry but over the last couple of months, I have been unable to find music from bands such as Taking Back Sunday, Coheed and Cambria, The Vandals, The Planet Smashers, Mustard Plug, and Big D and the Kids Table. Whenever I try to special order one of these CDs I usually just end up getting laughed at by the obnoxious owner who seems to think that if a band is not on a major label its not worth listening to. (He literally laughed at me and said, "Equal Vision Records? Who listens to crap like that?" when I ordered Coheed and Cambria's first CD) This isn't just one store. Anywhere you go, mainstream music is completely destroying lesser known music. Its a sad day when you can't even go to a store and buy a CD without being laughed at for what you listen to. "I know everything sucks, and this is going to be the last time you hear me complain"

I can vouch for this experience. Virtually every time I search for something at the West Bend store, it isn't there and the manager has never heard of it. For example, not too long ago I was looking for the new album by Snow Patrol, and the owner looked at me like I was nuts. I refused to order it through them, opting to instead give my money to an online outlet. (Ironically, a few days after the CD arrived I saw it prominently displayed at Target--it's regrettable when Exclusive is regularly trumped by Target.)

I have nothing against the mainstream--the Top 40 have every right to exist--but I do have difficulty with the marketing, distribution, and airplay schemes that strategically and intentionally marginalize anyone with tastes that reside left of the dial. For some of these record companies, it's not enough to sell millions of crappy CDs--they also want to make sure we can't buy anything else.

i have the same problem with the exclusive company. i cant find anything in that store. its so confusing. and i agree that the people that work there are really rude. so i dont go there anymore. i just have my friends put together a cd for me, from stuff they've downloaded or cds they already have. it seems to work easier than being laughed at or not being able to find what you are looking for.

I try as hard as possible to avoid the music stores around here (even though I believe in trying to keep the "small man" [smaller businesses, such as The Exclusive Company] alive). In general, I find that the Exclusive Company's employees generally have a very limited knowledge about music altogether. Their resident punk/indie (my main area of focus) "guy" is a know-it-all that lacks the "know"; and as Andy so insightfully described the owner, he truly is a bufoon. To be honest, I'd rather spend the extra few bucks to order a CD online and pay for shipping. BUT, I did get a great deal at the Vans' Warped Tour this year while purchasing CD's: I bought 4 Vagrant Records' CD's (full-lengths and not compilations) for $20.

I haven't bought a single CD from a store (I restrict myself to iTunes, usually) since Halloween of last year. And, even that was from Target.

Ok, I take back some of what I said about their selection because today I went in just to look around and i found a Streetlight Manifesto CD which I wouldn't expect that they would have even be able to order.

But come on...who wouldn't laugh at you for wanting C&C ? Razz

But yea, I don't like that store too much either....though, they always seem to have DK stuff, but unfortunately no Spoken Word from Jello

They don't carry Against Me! or Rise Against though, both of which are/were on Fat Wreck, which as far as indie goes, is pretty big. Rise Against just released their new album on Dreamworks, however, and they don't have that either....

Luke, I think its great that the lead singer of one of your favorite bands (Anti-Flag) has annoyingly high voice (just like Coheed and Cambria), but its ok because he's screeching about "anarchy" and all things "punk rawk."

(Oh, and it probably helps that he trys to sound British even though he's from Glenshaw, Pennsylvania)

Actually...hes not screeching about "anarchy" in the least bit...They are full supporters of Democracy...as long as it is a democracy. Coheed however.....just if it wasn't for Claudio, i'd listen to them.

Edit: Oh and when Chris Head just talks and isn't trying to sound british or shout, he sounds a lot like Mr. Beltmann...
