Because I want to tell a f------ story and my f------ professor says I need to "mine and translate" for at least "three" f------ "months" when I've already been f----- "mining and translating" for weeks, and because he says "translating narratives filmically" you almost always get f------ wrong the first five f------ times, and because it's like dealing with six-year-olds who don't know what they're f------ talking about so use ignorant generalities to argue with you.

There, had to vent, sorry.

Matt, I feel bad that none of us posted a response in here.

I'll just say that I read it the day you posted, and ever since have been hoping for the best. Hang in there.

Care to give us a f------ update?

Eric

LOL.

Well, I sorta realized after I posted this that it was nearly impossible to reply to, but it did help me vent my frustration, so that's good.

I dropped the class that was really irking me, which is good and bad: good because I can retake it with a professor I like very much, but bad because I'll have to wait until fall to do so and because I'm not taking any film production classes right now. (I'm taking a video production class, which I like a lot, but I'm really to eager to get my hands on film.) But, yeah, things are going much better; I recently became editor of the film department of the UWM Leader, a school newspaper, so I'm excited about that. I'm hoping to really get out some interesting film writing; we're trying to do a Godard retrospective before Notre Musique premieres at the Union.

Thanks for the interest, though, Eric.

Matt, you go to UW-Milwaukee, correct?

If so, what's the film school like there? I'm thinking about visiting UWM in the future to see if it fits me.

It's hit and miss with me. They definitely steer towards an experimental, avant-garde aesthetic, which is usually exciting and opens up many possibilities. Sometimes, however, some professors think that anything that isn't avant-garde, especially narratives, are inherently cliched and pointless. It definitely doesn't have the most up-to-date equipment, but that can sort of be a benefit, I think; editing movies on dated Steinbecks or splicers and using silent 16mm Bell & Howells definitely leads to sort of an underground, do-it-yourself feel, and you always have the opportunity to play around with style and technique. The film school doesn't seem extremely competitive, which I would assume it would be at more prestigious industry film schools; everybody simply seems to be in one artistic community, which is nice. And of course it's not very expensive, so it may be the ideal place to start out learning film inexpensively and then go on to more advanced, expensive equipment. And I really like the city of Milwaukee a lot, so that's a plus for me.

If you want to stay in the Midwest it's unfortunately one of the few film schools around, although there are quite a few in Chicago. I've heard excellent things about the University of Texas in Austin as well.

Good luck, man.

FYI Bell and Howell also make envelope inserting equipment, if anyone is interested or plans to make guest appearances on Jeopardy. Which would probably be the only place this information might come in handy, unless you sell envelopes!
