CD: "Hands On" by DJ Nu-Mark, an outstanding mix whose most jaw-dropping segue goes from the French rap "Samurai" by Skurij'n to the German rap "Crew Song" by Jannek, Malo, and Nandi. One of the funkiest mixes I've heard in a long time.

CD Player: Kanye West, The College Dropout

I really do enjoy this CD a lot, despite the fact that it plays right into the cliches that have haunted rap for the last 15 years: the idea that selling drugs makes you a wealthy and respectable person. I don't agree with it, but it's far less lurid than anything "Fitty Cent" has put out, so by that rationale, I don't feel so inherently ashamed for enjoying West's latest album.

It probably doesn't hurt that Kanye's tracks really push my new subwoofer in my car to its limit, either. Cool

I think Kanye West is a bit overrated - although he does have his own production style and his influence is all over the place on radio rap, sped-up soul samples can only be exciting for so long, and as you mentioned, he awkwardly places rhymes about smoking pot and sexing up women (only the thin ones, of course) with pseudo-social conscious songs like "All Falls Down" and "Spaceship" (which are the two best songs on "The College Dropout" in my opinion).

Have you heard MF Doom Jordanio?

I'm seeing Dylan Saturday night, free of charge. (An old friend is paying up on an old debt.)

Merle is opening for Dylan tonight. I have zero familiarity with his music--country just isn't my taste--so I thought I'd give this a spin.

Whatever happened to not "getting" Bob Dylan? Finally see the light?

Wow, I had forgotten all about that! In the years since I confessed that, I have revisited numerous Dylan albums and watched Don't Look Back... and I must say that I appreciate Dylan even less now. Still, I have the opportunity to see a music legend live, and that's good enough for me--especially since it's on someone else's dime. Besides, maybe the live experience will alter my perceptions.

I would recommend the album "Madvillainy" by Madvillain or "MM Food" by MF Doom (he is the MC on both). I listed to Madvillainy at least twenty times in the first week I bought it. It's neat.

I dunno. It's okay, I guess. Might catch them in concert next week, but I'll probably hit Guster instead.

Me three.

Okay, so I've only heard the single, but I really dig it. I never really listened to Beck much before seeing Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, but "Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometimes" is such a great song that I was forced to check out some of the stuff I skipped over. Most of the stuff I've heard from Sea Change is wonderful, and allmusic.com critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine called it "one of the greatest late-night, brokenhearted albums in pop," so I'll certainly be picking it up in the future. I might pick up Guero too.

I've really been liking Napster, as of late, which is probably the only reason I took a chance on Guero. Because my computer is the main place I listen to music, it doesn't much bother me you can't burn the songs to CDs unless you pay for them individually. 15 bucks a month is quite a steal.
