Pride is excessive belief in one's own abilities, that interferes with the individual's recognition of the grace of God. It has been called the sin from which all others arise. Pride is also known as Vanity.

Envy is the desire for others' traits, status, abilities, or situation.

Gluttony is an inordinate desire to consume more than that which one requires.

Lust is an inordinate craving for the pleasures of the body.

Anger is manifested in the individual who spurns love and opts instead for fury. It is also known as Wrath.

Greed is the desire for material wealth or gain, ignoring the realm of the spiritual. It is also called Avarice or Covetousness.

Sloth is the avoidance of physical or spiritual work.

Gluttony for me, even though I'm not fat or anything.

Boy, this requires some personal disclosures, doesn't it, Mr. Lime?

I'd immediately cross off Greed and Envy. I'm a strict believer in minimalism, and I'd actually like to have less stuff and less clutter. (This applies to more than material possessions; for example, I cut off all my hair a few years back because I didn't want to spent another moment thinking about something as trivial as style.) The Transcendentalists were onto something, and I'd say, that like them, I possess a profoundly enlightened view of how we ought to live. Does that answer your question? Laughing

I don't believe in the "deadly sins" and I don't think you'll be condemned to eternal punishment for simply acting out innate human drives and emotions.

That said, lust.

Hey, I think you're using someone else's avatar, man. I think you may as well change it before that person [Kurosawa Fan] gets angry. Cool

It's a very good avatar. I'm using it right now on another movie forum, but oh well. Lawrence of Arabia is the greatest movie of all time.

You lolled as in "LOL"? I hate it when people use that word. So simplistic and lazy. Orwell's satirical prediction in 1984 is indeed coming true... We're killing language.

I don't believe in sin either, but I do believe in personal flaws that must be overcome. From that list, mine, I'm fairly certain, is Anger.

Too much pride to admit to pride, eh? Wink

Actually, I'm drawn Transcendentalism too. I had Transcendental experiences of the kind Wordsworth wrote about before I'd even heard of the philosophy, and some of his poems sent chills up my spine when I first encountered them. I believe there's something to such experiences, although I believe they are more mental than mystical or metaphysical.

I "lolled" in tribute to Gimmick Account's phrasing. Besides, isn't the introduction of new phrasings and new slang and new descriptions an expansion of language? New choices give us new ways to be precise when expressing ourselves. Language can only be killed if we believe that it can exist only in one set form; yet language has always been in a state of flux and always will be. Descriptive linguists recognize that fact and try to chronicle the ways people currently use language; prescriptivists try to impose a "correct" method of communicating--as if language should never evolve.

Orwell predicted a reduction of acceptable language, not an expansion.

"So simplistic and lazy." Man, I hate it when people write in fragments. It's as if they don't know how to compose a simple sentence. Learn the language! Wink

All right, I agree -- you're the English teacher, after all, not I.
