From www.lightsoutntertainment.com ...

---------------------------------------------

28 Days Later: The LA Times ran an article today announcing that the original, darker ending of 28 Days Later will be attached to the end credits of 1400 prints across the US starting on July 25th:

In an unusual marketing move to pump up the buzz surrounding its horror hit "28 Days Later," Fox Searchlight will attach the film's original, rather downbeat ending to all 1,400 prints now playing in theaters.

Although outtakes, filmmaker narration and alternate endings have become an expected part of DVD movie packages, Fox Searchlight said Wednesday it is aware of no other instance in which alternate scenes were added to a film still in theatrical release.

The ending now in theaters was the film's original scripted ending but was ditched by screenwriter Alex Garland and director Danny Boyle during production in favor of a darker coda. That grim ending was included in the first cut of the film and tested with preview audiences in theaters. But Boyle and his filmmaking team ultimately rejected the scene, set in a hospital, as simply too bleak.

---------------------------------------------

This is pretty interesting because the reason I didn't like the film (I gave it 2.5/4 [C+, maybe B-]) was because of the ending. I did like the very last scene, which I suppose they're referring to, but I think it would be a much better film, if it ended on a different note. I don't think it's worth seeing again, just for this, but I'll be interested to see this ending on DVD. Smile

Good news, I think. 28 Days Later is my favorite film so far this year, but that ending is completely out of place.

Does anyone know what the alternate ending entails, beside being more downbeat?

And for the record, I actually liked the "happy" ending. The characters earned the outcome. I'm not one for ridiculously happy endings (in fact, many of my friends seem to believe I prefer terrible, beak conclusions), but I'm also not one for needlessly bleak ones either (think "History X" or the cut coda from "Clerks").

Personally, I'm with Ebert about a great ending:

"My imagination is just diabolical enough that when that jet fighter appears toward the end, I wish it had appeared, circled back--and opened fire."

The article says that it features Jim in a hospital. Could it really be that he woke up in the same hospital as the second scene and it was all a dream, like we think for the breif first 20 seconds of the final scene?

As for the best ending, what would be better and more downbeat than them turning into zombies, even though it would be sort of predictable. I did like the "happy" ending, but I'm not sure the note it ended on really fit with what the movie is trying to say. Sure it's upbeat, and we leave the theatre happy, but was it the most effective it could've been that way?

So, did anyone catch the alternate ending?

didn't see it myself but... ***SPOILER*** i heard the only difference was that at the end when the plane arrives, jim (or whatever protagonist's name is) dies in the end instead of remaining living because he's injured i think.

doesn't seem like much to write home about

The alternate ending screened after the credits was short,

it basically just showed the main guy die, and then the two girls

leave, thats it. Nothing to it.

I'm not sure the movie had a 'happy' ending, they were

wiping out english cities in order to quarantine them.

Whos to say they were not going to kill them, as opposed to save them.

I believe that plane that flew over them was not a rescue squad.

That's a possibility. But if we are to make assumptions based solely on what the movie offers us -- if only in tone -- then the ending seems a little more positive. There's nothing that suggest, as I remember it, that the characters are in any danger when the plane spots them.

yeah, thats true.

But thats what I like about the ending.

You dont really know,

but I guess the most logical reasoning is that they are getting rescued.

What are your thoughts on the ending of Cabin Fever?

they show the last body in the river, then it cuts

to the town folk drinking cool-ade, which me and friend thought

"Are they all getting infected"

if so, what a dark ending.

Shocked Be sure to post spoiler warnings! And place the spoiler in a lighter-colored font, to make sure someone won't mistakenly read it if he's trying to avoid it. Like this:

SPOILERSIn answer to your question, yes, I thought the ending suggested that the town was soon to be infected by the virus.END SPOILERS
