Just a reminder: the DVD was just released today. Even though I didn't think I was ready for another viewing, I watched it earlier and was even more rewarded than I was before, now that I care so much about the characters going into it.

I'll be lucky if I can find it in my town to rent (or buy, for that matter). I'll take a look for it, thought. BTW, love your avatar, filmsRpriceless.

I got a DVD screener from Lions Gate (no extras, just the film). I meant to have a review up before today, but the truth is I haven't been able to finish watching it. I saw Irreversible during its theatrical run and it was probably the most painful moviegoing experience I've ever had. It made me physically sick, and I was literally shaking near the end of the infamous rape scene. Obviously, the film succeeded on a visceral level, but I wasn't sure if Noe had anything to say other than, Hey, shit happens. The world is a cruel, brutal, ugly place. Look, see. No, don't look away: I said look, you stupid fucker.

Upon trying to view it on DVD, I couldn't even get past the first 30 minutes. I want to give the film another chance, but I gotta admit that I don't know if I'm up for it. Could be the film is too effective for its own good (at least on a visceral level), but, really, does Noe have anything worthwhile to say? Maybe he does and I just didn't hear it the first time around because I was a bit too shell-shocked to catch it.

I'd be interested with reading your review, if you ever write one. I wanted to see it again to confirm it being as incredible as I thought. When I saw it in theaters, I though I admired it for making me feel as many emotions as I thought it did, and like you, I was unsure of why Noe put me through as much. Watching it again, I think it's a masterpiece and one that can be discussed down many avenues of thought. I'd be willing to give you my thoughts on its complexity, if you are interested -- even if I may not know of the director's intentions, I am still able to look deep into it. (Among the things I noticed, Kubrick greatly inspired Noe, and it's seen in Irreversible because it parallels Eyes Wide Shut quite often.) The DVD promised a commentary, a deleted scene (although, from what I hear, the scene is nothing special), and featurettes but disappointed in the extras department, not that it matters much anyway.

Michael, how would you compare "Irreversible" to "August Underground"? I haven't seen either, but I'm interested in seeing the former, and a little wary of the latter. Yet, your comments seem to suggest that "Irreversible" trumps "August" in terms of discomfort, even though it has relatively less onscreen brutality (or, at least, as far as I gather). Thoughts?

Sheesh, August Underground is a film I would never watch again. I'd say that in terms of the amount of discomfort I experienced while viewing them, August Underground and Irreversible are probably about the same. Irreversible really only has two major scenes of brutal violence, but both of them are nearly unbearable. I know filmsRpriceless has seen August as well, so maybe he'll chime in with his thoughts.

Irreversible may be the more difficult experience for me because of how much I cared about the characters (on a second viewing, it hurts even more because you care about them going into it), and as much pain as it causes me, I wanted to see it again to confirm its grandeur. I dunno about seeing it a third time, but I'd like to one day because I'm just beginning to notice its depth and parallels, etc. Like Michael, August Underground is a film that I'd never watch again, period. In this film, you don't have anyone to care about because our main characters are 2 killers and they kill their victims before we have a chance for a bond to grow with them. Maybe it's just me, though.

I rented it today. After hearing how artless and digusting it was supposed to be I just couldn't wait... it was definitely disgusting. Whether it's art or not is the grand controversy. If you ask me, a point that should be of medium controversy is: "Why the hell was this movie backwards? Because Memento was?"

Do not watch with your grandmother, spouse, cousin Jill or anyone else to whom you may have to explain your reasons for watching it. During those "two scenes" I even had to ask myself why. I still havent come up with an answer. Morbid curiosity, I guess...

The film is a great way to experience what's it's like to smash someone's skull in with a fire extinguisher and rape, then brutalize, a woman. Thankfully, I can honestly say I didn't "get off" on it. Think of Irreversable as a Litmus test to see if you are someone who should be in jail or not...

I haven't seen "Irreversible" yet (can't wait to), but considering the little I've heard about its extremely graphic violence, I would hope even the movie's most adamant supporters don't get off on it.

I'm not sure that I'll have the urge to watch it ever (nor would my parents let me right now), even though it does strike me as interesting...All the controversy over it, though, is quite intruiging.

All I know is: Alex never should have been down in that underpass/corridor. She brought it upon herself. She has noone but herself to blame... except maybe the set designer who painted the walls RED. Wink
