Hey NW, didja see that the latest issue of Film Comment has an Amy Taubin interview with Clint Eastwood? I haven't read it yet, but that sounds very promising.

No, I haven't. I'll keep an eye out for it. Thanks for the heads-up.

For books on the horror genre, David J. Skal is my favorite.

For everything else, there's Andre Bazin.

Any one know the best noir author?

I don't know who is the best, but Foster Hirsch's The Dark Side of the Screen, is really good, and I'd also recommend the three Film Noir Readers, edited by Alain Silver and James Ursini.

Just started reading Alien Woman: The Making of Lt. Ellen Ripley, by Ximena Gallardo C. and C. Jason Smith. It examines sex and gender in the Alien series, and how each incarnation of the character of Ripley represents, and either breaks or follows, the concerns, views, and presumptions of the era in which the movie she appears in was made. Early on, the authors claim that they won't apply any one particular theory to the films, but so far they've been pretty feminist. Still, good stuff, but then I've boundlessly fascinated by the movie Alien since I was ten.
