I am astounded. Seriously Eric, are you telling me you haven't seen this gem of a film, with two of the finest Britsh actors of all time, Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine? Sleuth is a classic cat-and-mouse thriller, with a twist at the beginning, middle and end. It's a masterpiece and one of my all-time favourites. See it and chime in later to tell me how brilliant it was.

The first 2 discs Netflix sent me were so scratched they wouldn't play. But the third arrived today in nearly pristine condition. Excellent, excellent... thanks for the recommendation. I half hoped the dialogue wouldn't actually mention Olivier's impotence--to me, that metaphor was made very clear throughout the entire picture--but otherwise the dialogue is the movie's best quality. I absolutely adored listening to these smart, clever, sophisticated lines coming from these two great actors. I was particularly interested in the class warfare theme, and both actors brilliantly convey the mutual contempt the classes have for each other. One question: When the Inspector first arrives, are we supposed to be sharing Olivier's viewpoint, and not realize that's Caine in costume? Are we supposed to be shocked when he tears off the mask? If so, it didn't work at all... I recognized him immediately. Anyway, marvelous picture: pro, maybe PRO.

Yes, I think so. I saw the stage play when I was but a lad, and I remember the audience gasping at the twist. I suspect the audience's reaction to the film was probably similar. It's probably something that worked better back when the film was first released.

Along a similar line: In Cronenberg's M. Butterfly I believe we the audience are intended to realized Song's sex long before Gallimard, a tactic, from what I understand, that is far different from the play.

I never saw the stage version--and I haven't seen the film since it was in theaters--but as I understand it, the film is substantially different. Besides, there's no hiding John Lone's five-o'clock-shadow. Very Happy

No, there isn't. I haven't seen the stage version either, but I find Cronenberg's portrait of denial more interesting than a surprise penis, a la Crying Game.

LOL. And I agree. I'm not a big fan of the movie, but in that respect it is moderately interesting. (I'm not a huge fan of Crying Game, either.)
