That point is worth repeating. I'm not sure I'd defend Evil Dead so vehemently, but your logic is profoundly sound: There's much more to appreciation than weighing flaws against virtues. The Murnau analogy is perfect.

What did you think of the "fuck you" scene?

I think the film is equally good as the original, although it may just be me.

Same here. I'm beginning to think that the Star Wars original trilogy is rather overrated; I can understand all the revolutionary baulderdash that they speak of -- the visual effects, the lightsabre fights, John Williams' theme and whatnot -- but cinematically speaking, and from a nowadays' viewpoint, the film is above average, but that's about it. It's pure escapism and nothing more, yes, but as such I don't think it should be regarded as a masterpiece. I, too, loved it as a kid, but my feelings toward it have changed. The Empire Strikes Back is the only truly great film in the series, in my opinion. And let's please not delve into the prequels.

Why? I've seen it countless times and still love it. Just wondering.

I hope your irony is at use here. Otherwise your unpredictability is really starting to kick in, Eric.

I think that's actually the most powerful scene in the film.

I tend to agree. It's very controversial, too, and somewhat offensive. But it has a point. Did you love the ending? 'Cos I certainly did.

I wasn't crazy about it to begin with, and repeated viewings have only confirmed my suspicions. It coasts by on some fairly uneven satire, and completely loses me in the second half. My review elaborates somewhat. I use no irony or sarcasm when I say that, for me, Monsters Inc. is a much more likable, resonant picture.

Heh heh. Don't have much choice when someone challenges "Back up your opinion or you shall feel my wrath, boy." Wink

I can't understand why the mirror scene in 25th Hour is considered controversial. Norton's character says inflammatory things, yes, but he doesn't speak for Lee or for the film--it's a scene that reveals details specific to one character. We're not asked to share his sentiments. I also wouldn't call it offensive, precisely because it has a point.

To answer your question, Mr. Lime, I think the scene works just fine, but it isn't my favorite in the picture. It strikes me as a tad schematic, a little too ostentatious. Just a tad, though.

My favorite scene in The 25th Hour is probably the closing montage, a heartbreakingly sad pipe dream; or perhaps the opening credits, which achieves great melancholy simply through Terence Blanchard's score and some abstract, but instantly recognizable, imagery; or Jacob and Frank's discussion next to the window as the 9/11 graveyard looms in the background, a haunting analogy between physical and emotional destruction. Basically, it's a great film - that was one of my favorites of 2002.

It's my 5th favourite of that year -- and matt, you just mentioned my three very favourite scenes from that film. We must be soul mates or something.

I do understand the controversy over that scene; only that it's not very reasonable. Some people may have thought that what Norton's character said was Lee's ideas, i.e. he thought everything that came out of his mouth, etc. However, this is not logical given that he insults the black people and whatnot; and that's not exactly what Lee thinks. Right? Yeah...

I agree with you, all in all.
