Depends on what you're looking for. For relatively mainstream titles, I'll usually wait for Blockbuster to have one of their clearance sales, like 3-for-2. Patience is important, too--I automatically rule out titles that are priced over 12.99, opting to wait until the price drops.

For more obscure titles, I'll try various online outlets, from Amazon to eBay. Plus, various used-merchandise shops (like CD Exchange) often have really great bargains.

I wish I had a "magic" answer, but I don't.

I made great money on eBay when it was 3 for 2. I can't wait till it comes back.

I don't buy used for two reasons:

a) The poor condition of the used discs

b) A lot of films I buy aren't available used

However, for those who do, Hollywood Video currently has a 3 PV's for 25 dollars. That's Less than $8.50 a DVD.

I've purchased hundreds of used discs, and this hasn't really been a problem. A few here and there have been scratched, but the overall savings make the rare return hassle a very, very small price to pay.

Me too. Sometimes you just gotta pony up. But eBay and Amazon routinely have used copies of even the most obscure titles.

Money has to be a concern, partially because I buy so many, and partially because I have a lot of other financial obligations!

Those don't qualify as obligations. They are recreation.

Today I took the bus to Mayfair, where I attended a matinee screening of Hellboy which I liked. Having two hours to spare, I spent the very little money I had on Rene Clair's And Then There Were None and a double-header of Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes films (mainly inspired by Fred Dobbs): Dressed to Kill and Terror by Night. Together, they were $13!

Cool...if you like these, I highly recommend the remastered MPI discs, I really love these films, and they are given loving treatment. The best, imo:

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes

Pearl of Death

House of Fear

The Spider Woman

Terror by Night

Sherlock Holmes Faces Death

Out of curiosity, Fred, have you read Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's original stories? I adore them. I have a collection of stories and two short novels that I've read over and over again since I've bought them.

Yes, I have, a long time ago (maybe fourth or fifth grade). I'm going to have to revisit them soon, especially since I now have 13 of the films. I've seen the Hammer vesion with Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee, and although I like Hammer Studios and Cushing and Lee, the film version wasn't that good. *** (of *****)

I bought Jules et Jim last night and watched it this morning. Fascinating film, really; it is both a celebration of life and an incredible ode to cinema. Lyrical, gorgeous, charming and tragic.

It's been a long while since I last Jules et Jim, but I recall being mesmerized by how Moreau functions on several planes. She inspires deep pain as well as deep happiness--and she wields that power by turns as a feather and as an axe. Swinging it around with unpredictable nuttiness, she first seduces these men and then bullies them into hanging on.

Although I prefer the others, Jules et Jim is perhaps more Truffautian than even Shoot the Piano Player, The Four Hundred Blows, and the short Les Mistons. What I mean is that it may be the most accessible version of his most common ingredients, that of people trapped by youth, emotions, misunderstandings, impulse, and, most importantly, empathy. It presents a violent triangle in which no one actually wants anyone else to be damaged.

I just recently purchased these two films:

Elephant & Capturing the Friedmans

Capturing the Friedmans second disc is nearly as informative/interesting as the film itself. It's a great buy for those who loved the film.
