The Magdalene Sisters (Mullan, 2003)
Doctor Zhivago (Lean, 1965)
Die Hard (McTiernan, 1988; Five Star Collection)
2001: A Space Odyssey (Kubrick 1968; replacing beat-up VHS edition)
Husbands and Wives (Allen 1992); replacing VHS)
Stardust Memories (Allen, 1980; replacing VHS)
All used, all under $10, all strong but flawed pictures. (The closest to masterful are, I think, Magdalene Sisters and Husbands and Wives.)

Beltmann, have you ever considered that, since you post all these DVD's you own, someone is going to try to rob you? _________________ Danny Baldwin

I didn't know anyone else actually wanted copies of Stardust Memories or The Circle.

You couldn't pay me enough money to get me to steal 2001. |

I have a particular interest in films that reduce--or completely deny--the significance of linear narrative. That said, I'm not a huge fan of 2001, either.

Me too, actually. Much Italian horror works from that viewpoint, if I understand you correctly, in particular Fulci's The Beyond and Michele Soavi's The Sect which function best as delirious visions. The Sect is a particularly underrated piece, where rabbits watch television, secret cults plot to achieve...something and Jamie Lee Curtis' sister Kelly gets impregnated by a giant stork. Great stuff. |

Although I've never responded very deeply to Italian horror--I'm even suspicious of Suspiria--I know what you mean, and can relate. The pleasures of those films have less to do with narrative than with method. I think plot is the least interesting entry point for appreciation of any art form, including cinema. For me, I am particularly attracted to works that experiment with how movies can operate on purely abstract, intellectual, or even visual levels, as found in the work of Brakhage, Barney, Maddin, Reggio, Ruttmann, Vertov, et al. I should also add the Surrealists (Bunuel and Cocteau), who probably have more in common with the feverish imagery of giallo than with the abstract expressionism that I love.

3 for $25 at Hollywood Video:
In America
Girl With A Pearl Earring
Mystic River
All very good movies, but I wouldn't come close to calling them masterpieces. I'd say River is the best, closely followed by America. _________________ Danny Baldwin

Firefly, the greatest television show ever, and a four-disc box set from Alpha Video that contains The Golem, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Murnau's Nosferatu, and the Lon Chaney Phantom of the Opera. I already own the excellent Image Entertainment edition of Nosferatu, and I'm sure these Alpha transfers are probably terrible, but for 17 smackers I couldn't resist. _________________ "If you're talking about censorship, and what things should be shown and what things shouldn't be shown, I've said that as an artist you have no social responsibility whatsoever."

For some reason, I haven't bought many DVD's recently. The last DVD I bought was LOVE OBJECT. |

Hit the $5 bin at WalMart and picked up:
Strange Days (Bigelow, 1995)
The Unnamable II (Ouellette, 1993)
Frogs (McCowen, 1972)
Eve's Bayou (Lemmons, 1997)
My wife hit a $5 bin down south and picked up for me:
The Lost World (Hoyt, 1925)
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde(Robertson, 1920) _________________ "If you're talking about censorship, and what things should be shown and what things shouldn't be shown, I've said that as an artist you have no social responsibility whatsoever."
