Car CD Player: Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, Lucinda Williams

Album in Heavy iTunes Rotation: Where You Want to Be, Taking Back Sunday

Playlist: "New Slang," The Shins; "A Fond Farewell," Elliott Smith; "1972," Josh Rouse

Taking Back Sunday's Where You Want to Be is a surprise. I didn't expect to like it. Their first album, Tell All Your Friends, was a well-done but bland incarnation of the teen-angsty emo/hardcore/pop-punk sound that's so popular now. Maybe I was beginning to get sick of the style by the time Tell All Your Friends rolled around, but aside from the catchy "Cute without the E," the album didn't do much for me. While Where You Want to Be isn't a major change of pace, it's a lot more passionate, heartfelt, and volatile -- yeah, it packs a punch. I dig it.

CD Player: Green Day, American Idiot

I wasn't sure what to expect from this CD, but I was pleasently surprised. I knew I was going to like it since Green Day has never really made a bad album. After hearing the single "American Idiot" I was expecting a fast, political, album leaning more towards recent NOFX and Pennywise. I was surprised to find that, musically and lyrically, "American Idiot" is easily Green Day's most mature album to date. Rather than the fast pop-punk I was expecting, there were many slower songs that reminded me of earlier songs such as "Christy Road", "Walking Alone", and "Macy's Day Parade." They even make frequent use of acoustic guitars and pianos throughout the album, a first for the band.

I like it, too. Some have hailed it as a punk-rock Sgt. Pepper, but I don't know if I'd go that far. Still good stuff, though.

I'd consider it better than Sgt. Pepper...but thats only because I really don't think the Beatles did anything revolutionary, so to me, that was just some subpar album that was kinda new to many people. (And I am considering albums released before Sgt. Pepper when I say that, because comparing it to something afterwards would be ignorant).

I'd consider the album, American Idiot, more like an updated Tommy. But, yea..thats what is in my CD player right now as well...

When I logged on, I too had American Idiot going in the player. I've listened through three times tonight, and I must agree that it's pretty good stuff. (Despite my general distaste for the willful immaturity of punk, I've always enjoyed Green Day, partially because they never were just pop punk. This new album further extends their musical interest, to nice effect. Plus, Billie Joe has some nice pipes, doesn't he?)

I also agree with Erickson that it's more accurate to compare American Idiot to Tommy than to Sgt. Pepper's, partly because neither of those remotely approach the brilliance of Pepper's. Surely, Luke, that "subpar album" crack was a prank -- or did you get your ears caught in your guitar strings again? Very Happy

Today I also picked up the new Elvis Costello album, The Delivery Man. I like it, especially "Country Darkness." But afterwards I just wanted to put Green Day back on.

Next purchases: Hopefully Brian Wilson's Smile and maybe Nellie McKay's Get Away From Me.

Everybody thinks this is a Ben Stiller quote from Starsky & Hutch, when us old farts who remember the rookie years of Fox know that it's a recycled gag from The Ben Stiller Show. He used the identical catchphrase and identical voice in several skits about a man who tries to cajole B-celebrities into saying hello to his wife. It was funnier then, too.

I actually didn't have a hint of Stiller on my mind when I posted that.

CD Player: Wave of Mutilation - Best of Pixies

Playlist: Built to Spill's "Fly Around Pretty Little Miss"; Starsailor's "Born Again"; The Rentals' "Friends of P."

I always liked The Rentals more than Weezer, which is probably crazy but there it is. I even really like the "let-down" sophomore album, Seven More Minutes.

I don't know what to think about the Pixies reunion...

hehe... ^_^...Anyway...I'm slightly joking, I realize its not a subpar album, but in my PERSONAL OPINION (so no one argues), I do think American Idiot is better than Sgt. Pepper's . However, I can't agree with beltmann that the majority of punk is immature...just the majority of commercialzed poppy rock with a punk image is. Give The Broadways a listen sometime, great stuff, with lyrics that aren't based on BS.

Cd Player: Anti-Flag, "Die for Your Government."

CD Player: A.C. Newman's The Slow Wonder

Playlist: Pavement's "Spit on a Stranger"; The Reputation's "Some Senseless Day"; Chopin's "Larghetto" from Piano Concerto No. 1 in E Minor.

I've been listening to American Idiot over and over, and the appeal only increases. Perhaps even more addicting, though, is A.C. Newman's The Slow Wonder, which is probably the catchiest album I've heard since, well, since Newman's last album as main songwriter for the New Pornographers. It's this year's breeziest, most exuberant 33 minutes of pop. Michael, have you heard this yet? It won me over more quickly than either Mass Romantic or Electric Version (two albums I adore and know you enjoy, too).
