I'd like to check this out. When I was in college I was a huge Pumpkins fanatic. I still think Siamese Dream is one of the great records of the last 15 years.

In My CD player: Queensyrche: Operation Mindrcime. I've been listening to it for the past week quite often, and I'm simply amazed by it. It may take some doing to get past the 80's vocals, but I can't honestly imagine any other way for them to sing such a melodramatic tale(melodramatic in a good way), and it feels when you listen to the entire CD that they created something not only powerful but almost unique in premise: a cd in which each song is but part of the same story. _________________ "There is no such thing as a moral or an immoral book. The "story" album isn't really rare... in just the last few months, both Green Day and Aimee Mann released their own stories, and the concept has a long, rich history.

Although, you must admit, it's getting rarer and rarer. Rolling Stone had an article about this awhile ago; it's now almost discouraged that an album tell a story with iTunes and Napster to download singles and whatnot. I guess that's what seperates the good bands from the great: whether they can tell a story and, at the same time, allow every song on an album to function on its own. _________________ Danny Baldwin

I'm only four tracks in, but I'm diggin' it.
I actually went to the store to pick up the new Eels double album as well, but of course our local Exclusive company had no copies, didn't know what I was talking about, and tried to convince me that the last Eels album was released in 2002. Again, I must ask: Why own a music store if you don't like music?

Alas, I have been defeated by the facts. It was partially an error in communication on my part-- a grievious one. I was more aiming at the fact that at the time, a good deal of 80's rock was quite similar sounding, and I hear lots of complaints on the singer from my friends and other people who disparage Queenscrythe: that they sound like everyone else. However, especially with the way that the CD was set up, they were definitely different from most other 80's bands, and certainly more talented than them. I suppose the gaps in specificity are an error that I should have percieved. Ah well, my fault.
Regardless, I have Bela Fleck and the Flecktones in my playlist as we speak. They're quite talented musically, and lots of their songs have wonderful melodies and are otherwise very well done. They're a bluegrass band, and anyone who hasn't heard of them would do well to at least give them a shot. _________________ "There is no such thing as a moral or an immoral book. Speaking of, has anyone heard "A Grand Don't Come For Free" by The Streets? The greatest "story" album in recent memory. Losing some money, watching soccer, and hanging out with your girlfriend has never seemed so epic. _________________ "I don't like talking to people I know, but strangers I have no problem with." -- Larry David, "Curb Your Enthusiasm" |

I caught Westerberg in concert a couple weeks ago--my ears were still ringing the next afternoon, perhaps because we were standing at the rail right up front--and have been on a bit of a Westerberg / Replacements kick recently.

I'm a big fan of Guster, so my wife and I made a point of catching their stop at the Eagles Ballroom in Milwaukee last night. They are currently touring college campuses and acknowledged that the huge Ballroom was the only exception on the entire tour.
The opening act, sadly, was unlistenable. The Zambonis play only songs about hockey--"Powerplay," "The Referee's Daughter" and "Guster Likes Hockey" were on the setlist--and rely exclusively on primitive chords, ugly melodies, and lame fratboy jokes. The mostly teen and college kid crowd was unreasonably kind to their schtick, which speaks either to their decency or to their indiscriminate taste. Some goodwill may have been earned when members of Guster joined the Zambonis for a mildly catchy tune, but when it was over my wife still leaned over and asked if we could send them to the penalty box.
Thankfully, Guster played an extremely crowdpleasing set loaded with fan favorites--rousers included "Fa Fa," "Barrel of a Gun" and the ridiculously catchy "Amsterdam"--and even introduced a handful of songs that are slated for their next album. For me, I was most thrilled to hear "Come Downstairs and Say Hello," and, during the encore, "Happier." The entire night, though, was filled with smart, complex, powerful melodies with absolutely unbelievable percussion. (For the uninitiated, drummer Brian Rosenworcel generally plays barehand, swatting at his two kits with a vengeance.) Guster's been been touring for 10 years, so it's no surprise that their set was extremely tight and polished.
For an encore, the band stood at the edge of the stage, unplugged their instruments and played a true acoustic song. For those of us in the balcony, it was nearly impossible to hear--those on the floor collectively inched their ears closer to the stage--but it was a very nice, very cool, very classy gesture.
Finally, it was nice to see the front-row denizens living up to tradition and tossing ping-pong balls at the band at the end of "Airport Song."

Meh, "Original Pirate Material" eats a giant burrito and craps all over "AGDCFF." _________________ Rattlesnake's Texas Cobra, you sonofabitch! |

Sounds messy.
I actually never got around to hearing AGDCFF, but I'm a big fan of OPM.

Eels - Blinking Lights and Other Revelations
Not a single retail outlet in our little burg of West Bend carried this (despite being the year's best-reviewed album, according to Metacritic). On a trip to Milwaukee this afternoon, I stopped at Best Buy, which also did not carry it. So I detoured over to Borders, which not only carried the album but had it prominently displayed near the entrance. Even better, it was discounted $3. Not a bad deal--$14.99 for 33 tracks of new Eels genius.
