Andrew Bird performed right before Wilco, and before he came on stage a guy sitting near me said he was waiting for Wilco and wanted to know what Bird was all about. I explained and he decided to give it a try, but not before spending the entire waiting period chain-smoking his weed. During Bird's third song, he left, saying, "That's enough. I need to hear some guitars, man." On the plus side, the group of teenagers standing directly behind us were clearly smitten with Bird, and repeatedly declared that they were going to buy his album ASAP. I like Andrew Bird a lot, but a little of his stuff goes a long way for me, so his short, 45-minute set seemed just about perfect.

Wilco played only two of the "new" songs that have worked their way into setlists over the last few months. Fortunately, they were "Talking To Myself About You," which Jeff dedicated to his wife Sue and is finally starting to evolve into something lively, and "Impossible Germany," which marked only the third time the song had been performed live. I had never heard "Germany" before--it first debuted only a week prior--and am happy to say that it might be the best of the new crop. It begins with a smooth rhythm before blowing apart with a Nels Cline solo; it reminded me a little of how "Ashes of American Flags" now climaxes with a Nels jam.

The weather was beautifully mild, the crowd seemed enthusiastic and generous, and everyone near us seemed to have a great time. Best of all, it was clear that the band was having a great time, too. Jeff's interactions with the crowd were looser and more abundant than I've ever seen before, which may have prompted him to turn a half-dozen songs into singalongs, including the unlikely candidate "Jesus, etc": Our love / Our love / Our love is all we have / Our love / Our love is all of God's money." I was wondering how Jeff would change the "living in Pekin" lyric from "Kingpin" to match Milwaukee, and he went with "I wanna be your kingpin / Living in... [long pause] Wisconsin."

The good vibe between the band and crowd may have also inspired Jeff to let loose on "Misunderstood," hurling more than 50 nuthins at the audience during its punk climax. (By my count, it was 57; the typical rendition is closer to 20-25.) Once he crossed 50, I started wondering about the record. What is the record?

There was no jig from Jeff during "Hummingbird," since he was suffering from stress fractures from too much running. He limped painfully off the stage at the end of the set, but that didn't stop the band from returning for two encores (as usual) and, according to an abandoned setlist, replacing the low-key "Passenger Side" with the much more aggressive kraut-rock of "Spiders." That song has been revitalized with a new fakeout ending--the band finishes, waits a few beats, and then continues with a full-on sonic blast that actually appears physically daunting.

Overall, the setlist was fairly predictable, top-heavy with crowdpleasers like "Heavy Metal Drummer" and "Shot In the Arm." (Is it just me, or is there's something in my veins, bloodier than blood a much better singalong than we can make it better?) Besides "Impossible Germany," there were no surprises, and very few chestnuts. Still, considering the outdoor festival setting, the song choices were probably very wise. It was certainly a much better Summerfest experience than I anticipated (and much better than 2003, when we were all stuffed into the North Shore stage in stifling heat).

Now the long shuttle ride home, that's a different story.

Interesting fan-shot video for Wilco's "At Least That's What You Said," during the A GHOST IS BORN tour:

From the Wilco website:

Quote:
Nonesuch Records will release Sunken Treasure: Live in the Pacific Northwest, a performance DVD by Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, on October 24. The disc includes performances and conversations gathered over five nights on Tweedy?s February 2006 solo acoustic tour, with footage from concerts at Seattle?s Moore Theater, Portland?s Crystal Ballroom, Eugene?s McDonald Theater, Arcata?s Humboldt State University, and The Fillmore in San Francisco. The film was directed by Christoph Green and Fugazi?s Brendan Canty, the creators of the documentary series Burn to Shine.

?I wanted this to feel how the tour felt to me,? said filmmaker Christoph Green, ??a chaptered flow down the west coast, showing the isolated bleakness you encounter when you travel quickly from one place to another, and then contrasting that with the experience at the shows?the gathering of people and the sense of community that is created night after night.

The audio tracks of all the songs featured on the DVD also will be available for anyone who purchases Sunken Treasure to download for free. This continues Wilco?s own tradition of regularly giving music to its fans via the Internet. In 2003 Wilco and Nonesuch made the More Like the Moon EP available for free download to anyone who had purchased YHF, and in 2005, they again made an EP of rare and live recordings available for free to anyone who had purchased A ghost is born, the band?s 2004 release.

During live solo performances, Tweedy draws from 200-plus songs with no particular set list in mind. The songs featured on the DVD feature music from Tweedy?s three bands: Uncle Tupelo, Wilco and Loose Fur. There is also one previously unreleased track, ?The Thanks I Get.? Wilco percussionist Glenn Kotche and guitarist Nels Cline, who opened for him on the February tour, also make guest appearances in Sunken Treasure, accompanying Tweedy on several songs.

The DVD will be available for pre-order on the webstore in September.

Full track listing: Sunken Treasure, Theologians, The Ruling Class, How to Fight Loneliness, Summerteeth, The Thanks I Get, I Am Trying to Break Your Heart, ELT, Shot in the Arm, In a Future Age, Laminated Cat, (Was I) In Your Dreams, Airline to Heaven, Heavy Metal Drummer, War on War.

The track listing is not nearly as long as I'd hoped; a typical Tweedy solo show will usually last 5-10 songs more. But perhaps there will be bonus features with additional footage.

Regardless, that sounds awesome. Almost makes up for the scrapping of the Wilco DVD.

Rolling Stone added "Acuff-Rose" to the setlist, which I hope is true.

Last year Jeff Tweedy went on another solo tour, portions of which were captured for a documentary that will shortly be released on DVD. The very cool trailer linked below is for that DVD, which was produced by the very ambitious folks in charge of the "Burn to Shine" series, if you're familiar.

Sunken Treasure: Live in the Pacific Nothwest

I caught the Madison show of this tour in November, but unfortunately the DVD focuses on the West Coast leg of the tour.

On a related note, rumor has it that Tweedy is finalizing plans for a late October solo show right here in Milwaukee, at the Riverside. While Wilco has played Milwaukee many, many times, I don't think Tweedy has ever come here alone.

Nice!

I went to Amazon.com to see if it's available for pre-order yet, but Amazon has been agonizingly slow for me for the past two days. The site won't even load. I may just get it from the Wilcoworld store, since they're also giving away free postcards with all pre-orders. Very Happy

It is. I pre-ordered last week, but then noticed that it became unavailable at the store. Two days later, it was back in the store--but the price had risen from 13.99 to 17.99. Fortunately, for me at least, Amazon is honoring my order at the original price. (I also ordered the new Neko Case ACL DVD.)

Got tickets to the Tweedy solo show in Milwaukee, Oct. 30th at the Pabst Theatre (which, for my money, is the best place for live music in the city).

Smarty or Jordan, are you guys going?

Just announced: Autumn Defense--side project for Wilco members John Stirratt and Pat Sansone--will open for Tweedy's solo show in Milwaukee.

I have all of the AD albums and a few live bootlegs, but have never before heard them live for myself, so I'm pleased by this news.

That's really cool. I've been listening to Circles a lot lately; it's a perfect fall album.

Dallas, Austin, and... Marfa? Where the flying feck is Marfa?

If I can convince a friend to go along, I might try to make the Austin date.

About halfway between Del Rio and El Paso, I believe. There's a rather large group of artists there. It's also the home of the Marfa Lights and where much of Giant was filmed. They've also been filming There Will Be Blood (Paul Thomas Anderson), and No Country for Old Men(Coen Brothers) out there this past year.

Here's a quote from an article on Billboard.com about the new Wilco album :

Quote:
Wilco's new album, "Sky Blue Sky," will arrive May 15 via Nonesuch, frontman Jeff Tweedy said on stage last night (Jan. 17) during a solo show in Nashville. Among the new songs Tweedy has been playing are the title track and "We Can Make It Better."

As a full band, Wilco has also previewed the tracks "Is That the Thanks I Get," "Lullaby for Rafters and Dreams," "On and On and On" and "Walken" in the past year.

"I think people may have an idea in their head about what it will sound like, but it's going to be different than that," Wilco bassist John Stirratt told Billboard.com in November. "Jeff had a lot of creative fire. And also, the way we recorded was so cool because a lot of the arrangements just grew right there with everybody sitting around. I'm over the moon about it. I think it will be a really beautiful record. It's a great time to be in Wilco."

"Sky Blue Sky" is the follow-up to 2004's "A Ghost Is Born," which has sold 346,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
