I haven't heard the reason, but I assume it was a business decision. Release dates are always in flux.

Wilco drummer Glenn Kotche opened with some of the most full-bodied percussion I've ever heard, and later joined Tweedy's acoustic show for several songs during the encore. The crowd went nuts... but not as crazy as when Jeff's kid, Spencer, came on stage to play drums for "ITMWLY."
As far as I can tell, this was the first time "Save Our Souls" has ever been played live... it's from the upcoming Loose Fur record, Jeff's side project with Kotche and Wilco producer Jim O'Rourke. The lyrics were very atypical for Jeff; I suspect that they were written by O'Rourke.
None of my top wishes were played--"Radio King," "Blasting Fonda," "Dash 7," "Not For the Season," "Cars Can't Escape"--but the set list still dug fairly deep into the back catalog. Here's the breakdown:

2 from the Uncle Tupelo days ("Satan," "Gun")

It was a strange crowd, filled with the rowdy as well as the reverent. There were a few jackasses who kept shouting "White Sox!" during songs, which prompted Jeff to ask, "White Sox? What does that have to do with me?" He later mocked their drunken loutishness by predicting that two of the most obnoxious Sox fans would soon come to blows despite being on the same side: "I love the Sox more!" "Johnny-come-lately!"
But of course good-humored mockery-as-chastisement is Jeff's usual tactic when he's annoyed... he also told them to cool it, or he would "go all sensitive singer-songwriter on your ass," threatening to play only the most tender ballads they ever heard in their life.
Jordan, it was very cool seeing you guys there! Where did you end up sitting? Fortunately for me and my friend, the two people first in line were guys I knew, so they saved seats for us near the front of the balcony. Were you disappointed he didn't play "Jesus, etc."?

I was a bit disappointed that he didn't play "Jesus, etc.," but that definitely didn't tarnish the set's luster. I honestly enjoyed it immensely: it was such an intimate setting for a show. Even the drunkards who interfered with the concert didn't affect it too much considering Jeff's ability to feed off the audience and create humor when it was needed.
Not to mention, Glenn's set was amazing as well! I'm picking that album up for sure when it comes out.

Pity that so many in the audience were unimpressed... seemed like the fratboys didn't have a clue about what they were hearing.

Wilco is on break: the fans will have to be temporarily satisfied with a live album ("Kicking Television," which came out this week from Nonesuch). Meanwhile, Mr. Tweedy has been making a new record with a side-project band, Loose Fur, and touring on his own. On Wednesday at the TriBeCa Performing Arts Center, he played a free concert, part of a weeklong series put on by Wall Street Rising, the nonprofit organization promoting the cultural life of the area of Lower Manhattan around the World Trade Center's former site. Introducing the show, the producer of the concert series, Michael Dorf, hit on a perfect malapropism: the organization, he explained, was "using the arts to bring people down."
That's it. Mr. Tweedy is a bringdown, a chronic ebb-tide personality. He might be depressing to watch if he weren't so irritable, and so good. Tetchy at the sound of acceptance, he fought with the audience members who threw it at him, mildly berating song-requesters. (One, yelling for the Wilco song "Radio Cure," was answered by a curt explanation that the easiest way to get him to play a song was to be quiet. The fan then yelled, at the same pitch, "Sorry!" It was an indie-rock moment.)
Running through 22 songs, including a few with Wilco's other guitarist, Nels Cline, on lap acoustic guitar, Mr. Tweedy stayed in tight focus; it helped that the sound was superb. (Mr. Cline opened the show by testing out the room's acoustics with a half-scorching experimental solo guitar set.)
There is no better way than a solo show to appraise Mr. Tweedy's lyrics, which are getting progressively spikier, sharper, more alive to internal rhymes and rhythms, less reliant on sentimental clich?. He showed this not just in image-glutted songs like "I Am Trying to Break Your Heart" ("I am an American aquarium drinker/ I assassin down the avenue") but also even in toss-offs, like a new one written for Loose Fur about Jesus returning as, uh, a crack addict. (The opening line was "He's having supper with the upper management of a new regime.")
Mr. Tweedy's songs, which have chord progressions sometimes reminiscent of those of the Beatles, Memphis soul, rural blues or Dylan - and are sometimes just based on riffs and drones - radiate wariness, a stalemate between desire and self-recrimination. "Someone Else's Song," "Black Eye," "Sunken Treasure": the sound of defeat just kept on coming. His smoky, scraped-out voice did its job in that respect, but he let it be known, with a minimum amount of peacocking, that he is a performer. At climaxes, he pushed that voice high for effect, and though it sounded strained, he hit all the notes in tune. |

Wow, if I had to guess, I would say that you guys are pretty big Wilco fans, which is find by me -- they're probably my favorite band, too, at least since Being There, which is still my favorite Wilco record.
One thing that bothers me is how the group is starting to become part of this whole "indie cred" scene, something that doesn't fit the group at all. No one cool ever dug Jeff Tweety back in the mid-nineties, so it's hilarious to me to see the hipsters buying their records.
Funny enough, I ran into this guy who was picking up a copy of A Ghost Is Born, and stuck up a conversation about the group. I almost yelled "blashemy" when he told me that old Wilco is mostly garbage. I then preceeded to tell him to go away and listen to his Sufjan Stevens records.
That being said, Wilco is my favorite band because Jeff has been able to progress as a songwriter throughout the years, and they consistently release great records are all quite different from one another. That development is part of the reason why they're great today.
Of course, I still laugh at people for owning Collective Soul records.

Certainly that continued evolution is one of the greatest appeals of the band--as much as I love A.M. and Being There (not to mention UT), I don't think Wilco would mean as much to me if they had they never progressed into more adventurous territory. The current lineup, especially, has grown more impressionistic, which really works.
I really don't mind the indie-cred thing. Thankfully the band doesn't seem to buy into all that meaningless hype, but if that hype is what introduces new fans to the band, that's okay with me. True, some of those hipsters are more interested in the "cool baggage" than the music itself, but maybe some of them will end up loving the music, too.
What do you have against Sufjan?
