Completely agree about Hide and Seek and The China Syndrome--I've actually been meaning to revisit Syndrome for some time. It's pretty solid stuff. I didn't take to Emma, but I haven't seen it since initial release and since then Paltrow has grown on me considerably. Maybe I should give it another shot.

It wasn't quite as good as the UK TV Pride & Prejudice, but a decent cast and solid material make it worthwhile. I had Jeremy Northam up for the next Bond, but it didn't happen. |

Northam would have been an excellent choice; he's vastly underrated as an actor, isn't he? Still, I think Craig will prove to be just fine, too.

The film would have benefitted from more chimp action. Jennifer Connelly's nice, but she's no chimp. |

Nothing for me this week. Between end-of-year teaching duties, grad school, selling our condo, buying a house, and moving this week, it's been a rough couple of months. Things should settle down a bit mid-June, at which point I'm hoping to do some heavy catching up.

The Truman Show (Dir. Peter Weir, 1998)
The Fifth Element (Dir. Luc Besson, 1997)
I saw The Truman Show in the theatre and I thought it was alright, but the more I saw it on television the more I liked it. So I got the DVD. I thought it was interesting that this was made before the reality tv craze really hit.
The Fifth Element is always a good watch for me. I saw the trailer, thought it looked stupid, rented it, ended up loving it. "Multipass" |

Strange you mention it, because I watched it in English class for a second time last week and had the same response.

Strange, I showed it in English class last week. We focused primarily on the film's ironic style--such as using high key lighting for what is essentially a horror film--and on its ethical dimensions, especially in the way it partially blames its own audience for the existence of questionable entertainment. It's a brilliant film, I think.

Still very busy these days, but in the last two weeks I managed to see Mission: Impossible III and, on DVD, Fun With Dick and Jane. I very much enjoyed M:I III, which is a sharp, speedy piece of popcorn with many breathtaking visuals. Despite some reliably energetic antics from Jim Carrey, I didn't care for Dick and Jane; even as a farce it lacks verisimilitude and, worse, lacks fangs. Still, I would gladly pay to see Carrey and Tea Leoni on screen together in the future.

That?s crazy you guys. I got the Special Edition and the Behind the scenes gave me more to think about. The actors all came up with their own back stories and why they were apart of the show. You don?t think about it but Truman?s best friend was also kind of sold into the show because he was his childhood friend at 7 years old up until they were 28 to 30 years old. They were actually best friends except it was fake, really weird.
I got to watch Hoodwinked and I gotta say it was great. Very vibrant colors throughout the movie and it's really funny as well. |

Actually, I did think about that... and the fact that Meryl, Truman's wife, is essentially a prostitute.

Best film: Intacto. Intense and enigmatic Spanish thriller about people who 'trade' in luck. Slow-moving but very interesting. The director is tipped to helm the 28 Days Later sequel, which should be interesting.
Runner-up: Pray. Not great, but an interesting little Japanese horror film. A refreshing change from the usual. A review is on the way to the Flipside.
The Manchurian Candidate just didn't connect with me. Well-made, but I found my attention wandering.
National Treasure is bollocks, even for an Indiana Jones rip-off.
The Mysterians is standard cheesy Japanese sci-fi. Very silly, but also rather amusing.
People say each Harry Potter movie gets better. For me, the past four films have turned the mildly entertaining into the rather tedious. At this rate, I will probably hate the next film.
But good news- Fragile is on the way, as we speak! A review will follow, of course. |
