How on earth can one detest Robert Downey Jr. (at least as an actor)?

I think its more about his actual person, but this was one of the 1st films where I could look past it.

Robert Downey Jr. rocks. I especially enjoyed his performance in US Marshals.

The Fourth Man (dir. Paul Verhoeven, 1983)*

The Island (dir. Michael Bay, 2005)*

Pride & Prejudice (dir. Joe Wright, 2005)*

Evil of Frankenstein (dir. Freddie Francis, 1964)*

X-Men III: The Last Stand (dir. Brett Ratner, 2006)*

The Grudge 2 (dir. Takashi Shimizu, 2006)*

Just to expand a little more on some of the films I've seen recently:

The Dark is well-acted and blessed by a fine, earthy range of colours, but seems strangely lifeless. There are some decent ideas in there, but the film falls back on cliche once too often to be entirely satisfying.

V For Vendetta is heavy-handed and righteous, but not terribly exciting. The Fantastic Four is the inverse, mildly exciting but lacking all substance. The Island is okay, but I didn't like Logan's Run in the first place. X-Men III isn't bad, but it's still just competent trash.

Of the three sci-fi films Terence Fisher directed in the 60s (the other two being Island of Terror and Night of the Big Heat), The Earth Dies Screaming is the weakest. Surprisingly downbeat- especially after that exciting title!- it lacks the kinetic energy that characterises even Fisher's lesser films. Freddie Francis' Evil of Frankenstein is better, but it's one of the weakest in the series, falling behind all the Fisher instalments. It's better than The Horror of Frankenstein, mind you.

The Grudge 2 is one of the wekaest of the lot, with only the direct-to-video Juon 2 being worse. It's still cheesy fun though. They're very much the modern-day Friday the 13th series (repetitive but fun) and Shimizu can do this stuff well. I'm hoping the next Japanese-language instalment is better though!

I thoroughly enjoyed The Fourth Man. It's sexy, funny, inventive, ludicrously over-the-top and consistently entertaining. It's a piss-take of art films, horror films, erotic thrillers and just about everything you can think of. I might be opening myself up to some criticism here, but I think it's Verhoeven's best film.

I agree--he's one of the most exciting actors alive.

As evidence, Andy, I direct you to these performances (among many others): Two Girls and a Guy, Chaplin, The Pick-Up Artist.

Not to mention the new A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, which I loved, but no one saw. Hopefully DVD brings the movie some success.

I'll be sure to check those out, because his performance in Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang is amazing. Have any of you seen it? I also saw Saw III last weekend, and loved it. I know most of you aren't fans, but it was an amazing "end" to the trillogy. I wish I had more time at school to see movies, but I simply don't. Especially when I keep debating my major over and over again.

So, naturally, when you have the rare opportunity, you go out and see Saw III.

Platteville doesn't exactly get the best movies in the theater. I'll admit that I like a lot of movies most people here do not find entertaining, but I am not Republican; I can live with that Razz

How many times must I tell you? You may either call me:

1. Conservative

2. Fascist

3. Nihilistic moron

But not Republican.

And what's worse?: Conservative or Robert Downey Jr. hater?

That's a tough one. But a conservative Robert Downey Jr. hater -- now that's pure evil. Laughing

Regardless, I think that we all just contributed to the highest number of posts in a five hour period on this board in a looong time.

It would have been even more if I had made a crack about how watching Saw III is less embarrassing than watching The Lizzie McGuire Movie, but I resisted that temptation.
