Just started From a Buick 8 by Stephen King for my fiction reading and Mind Hunter by John Douglas and Mark Olshaker for my nonfic. (I put down Haunted America. You can only read so many ghost stories before they start to feel the same.)

I finished Great Expectations a week ago. Then I went to my school library and picked up a book called Radio, Radio. Read it in less than a day, but didn't like it much overall. I also picked up Robert Bloch's Psycho and am reading it at the moment... it's definitely great, and did you know that Marion (Mary in the book) gets decapitated in the shower? Cool

And it's done with typical Blochian word-play:

Mary started to scream, and then the curtains parted further and a hand appeared, holding a butcher's knife. It was the knife that, a moments later, cut off her scream.

And her head.

I'm a big fan of Bloch's short stories, but I didn't care for Psycho. I thought the writing was rather pedestrian overall, and I felt the characters were particularly underdeveloped. Definitely one of those rare cases where the movie is better than the book.

I may actually be reading something for pleasure again: Michael Shaara's The Killer Angels.

I just picked up a volume of mystery stories that includes The Maltese Falcon and The Third Man.

Joy...

Over the holidays I read Old School, a novel by Tobias Wolff (who is probably best-known for This Boy's Life). It has nothing to do with Will Ferrell's exposed genitals. Set at a private prep school in the Sixties, the unnamed narrator desires to win at least one of the school's three literary competitions: After reading a batch of submissions, a celebrated American writer will visit the school and submit to an hour-long chat with the winning student. The first part of the book is structured around these visits--first Frost, then Rand, then Hemingway--and Wolff hilariously captures the character of those famous personalities. What begins as an ode to the pleasure and pain of literature, however, eventually gives way to a fascinating account of intertwined ethics and memory. I thought it was terrific.

Good to hear from you, Mr. Lime. Where've ya been?

I wondered where he was, too. Checked in on his website awhile ago and saw he was still updating, so I was more puzzled than ever. Why would anyone want to leave us? It makes it so damn sad. Laughing

Been nowhere, but it just seems that somehow, for some reason, an abyss of uncertainty was created in my mind, and it prevented me from going to this site. Ah well.

Nice to hear that you, my dear Danny, have been visiting my website. I thought I was just doing it for myself.

Oh yeah, and I'm reading Tolstoy's War and Peace now, by the way.
