The beating of The Elephant Man ("I'm not an animal! I'm not an animal!" gets me every time, and soe does Boromir's death in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.

What are your choices?

Probably the final fifteen minutes of Dead Ringers.

I watched Unforgiven recently, and I think William Munny's downfall into his old ways is a great recent case in point.

I think The Godfather trilogy gives us three: Michael shutting the door on his wife at the end of the original, Fredo on the boat in Part II, and the finale of Part III.

Also, the ending of Vertigo and the entirety of Grave of the Fireflies.

In find it way more shocking than tragic, although it is quite tragic when you think about it.
