I'm saddened. Sontag is one of my favorite writers, and not just because she was a sharp film analyst. The last book of hers that I read was the recent Regarding the Pain of Others, about the human effects of war--and photojournalism--on the planet entire.

I was only slightly familiar with her writings on film, and I didn't much agree with the little I read, but she had a strong and direct style, and was, at least, never namby-pamby about anything.

Even when I disagreed with her, she still provoked more personal thoughts about cinema--or, really, any other topic--than just about any other writer I can think of. To me, that's a more valuable service than merely validating my own perceptions to a work. Those are the critics that I always respond to the most; those are the ones I actively seek out. I'm going to miss her insights.
