my vote is for george romero's 'land of the dead'. i dunno, i'm a zombie freak. i love the 'dead' movies and i've heard this upcoming installment is supposed to be just as good. anyway, does anyone have similar thoughts or if not, what movies are you counting down the days til their opening?

I'm looking forward to Land of the Dead too. But at this point, I'm most anticipating Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and Serenity.

Peter Jackson's King Kong should be a hoot, and so far Episode III looks promising, but it has a lot to do to redeem Ep I & II.

I'm also looking forward to War of the Worlds, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Batman Begins, Jurassic Park IV, Constantine, The Ring Two and Sin City.[/quote]

Shocked :?

beltmann, i think i remember you referring to the star wars trilogy as "genocidal warmongering" or something to that effect. while you may not be inaccurate, that is most definitely the first time i've ever heard it described like that.

lol?

In this case, Eric is razzing on pesty-ramona, not Star Wars.

NW is correct. I suspect that pesty_ramona is looking forward to his/her paycheck far more than Land of the Dead. As for George Lucas... I was born in 1974, which left me no choice when it came to Star Wars. Primarily as an extension of my nostalgia, I can't wait to see Sith. But I agree with NW that Lucas has his work cut out for him: Most of my goodwill was numbed by the last two installments.

I vaguely recall saying something about warmongering in Star Wars, and I'm sure I was referring to how the series naively treats war exclusively as an adventure spectacle, celebrating the act of interplanetary war by depicting it as an essentially abstract, bloodless phenomenon. (Consider how Lucas isn't the least bit interested in making the annihilation of entire planets register emotionally or even intellectually.) To me, Star Wars conspicuously promotes the kind of Homeric joy that led many Americans to take pride in the opening days of the Iraq invasion--as long as the enemy is faceless, we might as well be mowing down cardboard cut-outs.

Maybe the problem is just that Star Wars is made for ten-year-old boys, and reflects their naive perceptions about war. That said, I can't wait to see Yoda drop-kick some baddies.

I'll second War of the Worlds, King Kong and Batman Begins, but I'm most eagerly anticipating Elizabethtown, Memoirs of a Geisha, Syriana, Melinda and Melinda, Primer, and a slew of smaller pictures that may or may not actually arrive in Milwaukee. I know Notre Musique and Sex Is Comedy are scheduled, thankfully.

Is it heresy to confess that I didn't find Hitchhiker's Guide very interesting?

I'm looking forward to Melina and Melina, too.

I'll add Imaginary Heroes to the list.

And I still can't stand Primer.

Hey Beltmann, did you know that Primer is scheduled at the UWM Union for next weekend (Jan 28-30)? I hope to see you there one of those days.

I did. I'm hoping to be there, but right now time is in short supply.

That was worth repeating.

Matt, you can view the schedule online here:

I'm most looking forward to Cameron Crowe's Elizabethtown, Lucky McKee's The Woods, Richard Linklater's A Scanner Darkly, Roman Polanski's Oliver Twist, and Terry Zwigoff's Art School Confidential. But I'm also eager to see Woody Allen's Melinda and Melinda, Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller's Sin City, Todd Solondz's Palindromes, Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins, and even Wes Craven's Cursed and Rob Zombie's The Devil's Rejects.

Now, if only Paul Thomas Anderson would hurry and make another movie.

EDIT: I forgot to include Romero's Land of the Dead, which I'm dying to see (though I still think Twilight of the Dead was a far better title).
