Reading Michael's reviews for Desecration and Horror made me want to check these films out, as Tomaselli seems fascinating to me. I think I know what to expect, but I hope I am pleasantly surprised and don't regret the blind buys I made. When they arrive on my door step, I will discuss them here, and even though I haven't seenthem yet, I anticpate Satan's Playground.

Desecration and Horror are certainly not for all tastes, but I dig them. Got under my skin, they did, big time, and I greatly admire Tomaselli's style, even if I'm still not sure there's much substance behind it. Tomaselli promises that Satan's Playground will be a big change of pace -- a straightforward, brutal, frightening horror film somewhat inspired by The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. He refers to it as a "popcorn scare film," and I, for one, can't wait to see it. Still, I'm a bit worried, as convincing character development/interaction and dialogue hasn't been Tomaselli's strong point thus far, and I think the only way a film like Satan's Playground will fully work is if we believe that these are real people in real danger. I guess we'll see. It'll probably be released sometime in 2004 and, hey, maybe it'll even score a theatrical release instead of doing the festival thing only to go straight to video like his first two.

Anyway, hope you enjoy them. Happy to see you back here!

I'm going to make the "blind buy" myself some time soon, fRp. I've read only a couple of negative reviews of Tomaselli's films in a pile of positive ones, Michael's included.

Lynch is one of my favorite filmmakers, and I've ... erm, appreciated Argento's work upon occasion. Actually, I like Inferno quite a bit.

Haven't seen as many Argento's as I want, but Lynch is also being one of my favorite filmmakers.

Well, I saved up enough dimes and have ordered the both of them. They probably won't get here till Thursday or Friday, when I'll be in LA watching the Alien re-release. Very Happy

Has anyone else seen either of these since the last post?

They finally arrived today and I got a chance to sit down and watch Horror. (I was going to watch them in order but, I ask you, how could I resist a movie called Horror?) Michael, I completely agree with your assessment that a deeper emotional core "could have pushed Horror over into bona fide masterpiece territory." I think my main problem with it was that the images didn't carry much impact beyond curiosity. Also, Tomaselli would benefit from tightening some of his pacing, and from resisting the urge to overstate images with sound effects. Still, in spite of the $3.95 budget, I think he accomplished what he set out to do. Once the movie sunk into me and I got in tune with it narrative leaps I really dug the sense of a collection of personal worlds collapsing into themselves and each other. Lizzy Mahon, as Grace, gives a flat-out good performance, and that can be said without having to fall back on qualifiers like ?considering the role she?s given.? I look forward to seeing her in more movies. Vincent Lambarti, as Grace?s father, puts forth a strong performance too, and it?s regrettable he has so little screen time. Also, loved the goat, but he was tad more cute than terrifying.

I?ll try to get to Desecration this weekend, and maybe even give Horror another watch.

I watched Desecration, and I think I liked it slightly better than Horror. I left more comments about both movies in the "What did you watch this week" thread, on this page.
