I'm most intrigued by how two of the foreign-language nominees are American productions.

Yeah, it almost seemed that the Foreign Language Category was the only one that wasn't highly politicized (unless, of course, one of them was a Miramax acquisition).

I just learned that no film shot in a foreign language is eligible for Best Picture at the Globes. It'll be interesting to see how Letters From Iwo Jima does come Oscar nomination time.

Interesting. What might their rationale be?

Your guess is as good as mine.

After all, they are the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

Since "Apocolytpo" is in Mayan and that's a dead language (I have to admit that I am assuming that Mayan is a dead language and no one really speaks it anymore, please correct me if I am wrong) does that really make it a foreign language?

Well, I suppose Any Language Other Than English is more appropriate. But the big question over Best Picture doesn't concern Apocalypto rather than Letters of Iwo Jima.

I believe several indigineous tribes still speak Mayan. To my knowlege, Gibson recruited non-actors from these tribes because they spoke the language. I could be wrong, though. Even interesting Diane Sawyer interviews only hold my attention for so long...

As usual when awards time comes around, I read the nominations and go "Eh?"

This year, I have seen literally two of the nominees, Pirates of the Carribbean: Dead Man's Chest and The Da Vinci Code, neither of which was exactly fantastic.

Of the others, I am very interested in seeing Pan's Labyrinth. So far the director's English-language films have been good, and his Spanish-language ones excellent, and I'm hoping this one follows the trend.

I am half-interested in The Departed simply because it's a remake of an excellent film. Forrest Whittaker and the unusual subject matter are enough to get me interested in Last King of Scotland.

Almarmingly, my favourite movies of 2006 list currently runs as follows:

1. Silent Hill

2. The Hills Have Eyes

And an honourable mention for Black Christmas.

I've seen nothing else that was anything more than moderately entertaining. Sad, for a movie critic, isn't it?

Screen Actors Guild Nominations

Actor: Leonardo DiCaprio, "Blood Diamond"; Ryan Gosling, "Half Nelson"; Peter O'Toole, "Venus"; Will Smith, "The Pursuit of Happyness"; Forest Whitaker, "The Last King of Scotland."

Actress: Penelope Cruz, "Volver"; Judi Dench, "Notes on a Scandal"; Helen Mirren, "The Queen"; Meryl Streep, "The Devil Wears Prada"; Kate Winslet, "Little Children."

Supporting actor: Alan Arkin, "Little Miss Sunshine"; Leonardo DiCaprio, "The Departed"; Jackie Earle Haley, "Little Children"; Djimon Hounsou, "Blood Diamond"; Eddie Murphy, "Dreamgirls."

Supporting actress: Adriana Barraza, "Babel"; Cate Blanchett, "Notes on a Scandal"; Abigail Breslin, "Little Miss Sunshine"; Jennifer Hudson, "Dreamgirls"; Rinko Kikuchi, "Babel."

Cast: "Babel," "Bobby," "The Departed," "Dreamgirls," "Little Miss Sunshine."

* * *

I could do without the cast-nominations for Babel and The Departed, but I think SAG nominated a more deserving bunch on the whole than the HFPA. I'm especially excited about the nominations of Jackie Earle Haley in Little Children, Djimon Hounsou in Blood Diamond, and Alan Arkin & Abigail Breslin in Little Miss Sunshine.
