Feedback is appreciated.

Most of my reviews aren't up because I won't be home for a while, and the rest of the site is almost entirely finished.

Thanks for kind words on your Links page, man. I appreciate it! By the way, I'm glad I'm not alone in my adoration for Invincible. And the movie I most want to see this summer is Rivers and Tides--happy to see you enjoyed it.

I dunno about that "100" rating system that D'Angelo uses. Grades/scores in general seem rather irrelevant--as if what's important about art is ranking works against one another--and I've never understood how we can separate something as subjective and complex as art into such minute divisions. What makes 72 different from 79? I could never feel comfortable being so precise.

I say stick with the 4-star system, or switch to the letter grades that we use over here at the Flipside. If we have to award scores, I like the letters--not quite as limiting as the stars, not so daunting as the 100. Maybe I just like them because my day job is teaching!

Thanks, Eric!

I was thinking about D'Angelo's system, but I'm not so sure. I agree with what you say, and I think a 4 star system is precise and I just feel really comfortable with it especially since I've been using it for a while. Keep up the great work, your reviews and Michael's reviews inspire me (I especially enjoyed your Fast Runner review).

I forgot to post this in the pimping forum. My bad.

Hey, filmsRpriceless! Nice site.

It seems that everyone has a screening log these days. I've been thinking about including a screening log on my personal site (which I'm very bad about updating). Maybe I'll get around to it eventually.

I have one suggestion, though. I would opt for a white background on all your pages. Your site design will be more consistent if all your pages have the same background color. Consistency is good. Also, the dark blue links on the black background are tough to read, not easy on the eyes. Other than that, it's a great start and I look forward to reading more of your commentary.

And thanks for the kind words on your links page. I haven't written any reviews in quite awhile (I've been burned out for so many reasons), but I'll be starting up again soon.

And, man, you have much better taste in movies than I did as a teenager.

Laughing

I tried once, and it's actually a lot harder than it seems. Writing commentary on every single movie you see, that you know often no one will read is stupid. But, I admire anyone who has the time and patience to do it after EVERY movie they see.

Thanks for your comments. I had every page white for a while, but I thought the opening looked better black. Maybe you're right, though. Thanks again.

Well, I'm not going to add commentary on every movie I see, but I see what you're saying.

I'm not sure that it's relevant whether someone else reads the comments in a screening log. What's important is recording an initial response, and simply writing. You've got to exercise those critical faculties in order to keep them sharp. That's actually the largest reason I visit this message board--the interaction helps keep the mind in shape. (This is the only board I ever frequent, because I simply don't have time to do more. Plus, I like this particular group of brains.)

I actually do keep a screening log, in the form of a database that I've been maintaining since 1991. I first started it merely to keep titles straight, mostly for research purposes. (I was a newspaper critic for 5 years, way back when...) Part of the database, though, is devoted to initial thoughts, which are often rambling and inconclusive--but accurate about my state at that specific time. Since they are so rough, I don't think I'd ever want to publish them on-line--the database has 4,653 entries, all with commentary that will never be read. Which brings me back to the point that audience is not always integral to the writing experience.

Hopefully, your relationship with cinema--an art form--is highly personal. Your writing about it ought to be the same.
