| Yes, it's a cliche question, but I watched The Hardcore Collection last night and still can't get it out of my mind. It seems like images of sadisim and necrophilia are just burned into my head. Any other movies that make you feel like that? |

I can't think of any entire movie I would deem wholly disturbing, but off the top of my head I'd point to the scenes of abuse in the Tina Turner bio-pic What's Love Got To Do With It? or the rape scene in Irreversible. That stuff gets me all cringy like.
By the way, what is The Hardcore Collection, anyway?

Good call. I forgot about that one (maybe willingly). That movie actually made me feel physically nauseous. I felt the same way after seeing Dead Ringers for the first time too, but now I find it more sad than disturbing.

I recently loaned my copy of Dead Ringers to my sister. After watching it, she declared my taste for it a form of elitism.

Actually, "elitist" is a peculiar reaction to Dead Ringers. Did she offer any explanation?

She said my interest in it was related solely to its critical reception, and that the critical reception was one of mass self-delusion--an act of pretension where critics all pretend to like something so as to separate themselves from the unwashed general public. (I'm paraphrasing with bigger, kinder words.) In other words, because she failed to see them, it's clearly impossible for any other eyes to truthfully discern virtues in Dead Ringers.

A wise man once said that life is too short to drink cheap liquor. Tell her the same is true for movies. Except for the drinking part. Unless you're making a metaphor. Anyway, did Dead Ringers get that much kudos from the critics? I always that it was a love-or-hate flick all around.

Yes, it is... but plenty of quality critics have declared it one of the enduring masterpieces of the Nineties. I can't agree that it's a masterpiece, but it's certainly one of Cronenberg's most fascinating and successful movies. Well, maybe it is a masterpiece...
Good example with Lost in Translation. I'm constantly defending that film to others--especially students--who are convinced that nothing happens in it. Not liking a film is one thing, but not understanding it is another.

I wonder how those who say "nothing happens" in Lost in Translation would react to Bruno Dumont's Twentynine Palms, in which even less happens during its two hours. That is, until the final 15 minutes or so, which will probably shock and horrify even the most jaded.
While Twentynine Palms might not be the most disturbing film I've ever seen once I've had some distance from it and more time to think about it, it's pretty high on my list right now. While it's now fading, after three or so weeks, its shattering impact stayed with me a lot longer than most movies. And I still haven't really figured out whether it's a brilliant, great film or a stupid, reprehensible one, but it left its mark on me, that's for sure. Dumont has described it as an "experimental horror film," and although it really defies categorization, it's certainly a horror film by the end. The film is comprised mostly of a young couple bickering and fucking against the backdrop of the desolate California desert. Hitchcock famously said, "Cinema is life with the boring bits cut out," but Dumont doesn't agree, as the minutes drag on like hours in Twentynine Palms with seemingly nothing happening. The lethargic pacing, maddening at first, slowly becomes mesmerizing, and once Twentynine Palms has us under its spell, it starts getting scary. It's the little touches (a car driving by our couple that seems to have no driver, for one) that hint that, yes, this is definitely a horror movie, and something unbearably horrible is going to happen.
And it does. Oh, boy, does it ever.
"Disturbed" is an understatement for what I felt at the end of that one.

I have a copy of Twentynine Palms on my shelf, but I haven't watched it yet. (Your description makes it sound like a sexualized, horror variation on Gerry--which means I should get to it in a hurry.) Did you see Dumont's Humanite?

No, I haven't seen either of Dumont's previous films.
I think Mike D'Angelo made a passing mention of Gerry in his review of Twentynine Palms. But aside from the seeming plotlessness and desert settings, I'm not sure the two have much in common -- but I haven't given it much thought, so there might be more to it. While Van Sant's style draws attention to itself, Dumont's style is almost transparent -- the camera is merely a detached observer, there's no score, etc. I don't think my own feelings about life and human nature jive with Dumont's, but it's an interesting, devastatingly effective film that has stayed with me for quite awhile.
