Choose one of a number of scenes from Woody Allen's "Annie Hall," "Manhattan," "Hannah and Her Sisters," "Sleeper," or "Crimes and Misdemeanors." He is a master at writing dialogue, and his words are music to my ears.

Off the top of my head, the Coens are masters of dialogue and they are really good at researching regional and period dialects. Whit Stillman movies have great talk, too. Barcelona, especially.

PT Anderson is my absolute favorite screenwriter. I can just listen to his films and enjoy them almost as much as watching.

Yeah, Whit Stillman movies have great dialogue. I like Metropolitan and Last Days of Disco a great deal, but I think I agree that Barcelona is his strongest work. Woody Allen is another good choice.

If we're just listing great dialogue writers, Billy Wilder, Ernst Lubitsch, and Preston Sturges must be mentioned. Cameron Crowe might be a modern equivalent; we'll see. And I hate to bring it up, but Tarantino--despite his considerable flaws--writes terrific dialogue.

I wouldn't know where to begin listing my favorite dialogue exchanges. How about "This calls for divine intervention!" Two points if you know its origin.

Possibilities (paraphrased from memory, so they might be a little off):

"A franc for your thoughts."

"The Germans wore grey. You wore blue."

"Was that cannon fire or my heart pounding?"

"I love you so much. And I hate this war so much."

"It doesn't take much to see that the problems of three people don't amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world."

I dunno. I'm stumped. Thinking about it, though, has made me want to see it again.

It's in one of your choices (actually you reminded me of another possibility, but it's nothing compared to this oddly out-of-place clunker).

We'll make it multiple choice.

Well, I think D ("...I hate this war") is the worst of the bunch. C ("Was that cannon fire...") and A ("A franc...") are close seconds. Still, Rick's follow-up to the franc line isn't bad: "Back home, they only cost a penny. I guess that's all they're worth" (or something like that). Is it D?
