Vitagraph Films, the distro arm of American Cinematheque, has picked up theatrical rights to Don Coscarelli's "Bubba Ho-Tep," which stars Bruce Campbell as "a geriatric Elvis who rids his Texas nursing home of an Egyptian mummy with the aid of Ossie Davis." Well then. The flick will roll out nationally following a September opening in L.A. and New York.

This is wonderful news. I'm so glad Bubba Ho-tep won't be going straight to video. It's a fantastic experience seeing Bubba Ho-tep with an enthusiastic audience.

| I was lucky enough to catch it when Coscarrelli was touring it around the country. Don and Bruce were there to present it, and much of the cast was in the theater, including Reggie Bannister. Angus Scrimm and Sam Raimi were there, too. Very novel film. I hope Coscarelli turns to Joe Lansdale again for more inspiration. |

Is this a preamble for a wide release, or is the distributor just testing the waters?

I don't know what their plans are, but I suspect that if it does well they'll start expanding. And if doesn't do well... probably not. Vitagraph is a small company, so the movie doesn't have a big advertising budget or anything. In fact, I volunteered to put a Bubba Ho-tep banner ad into rotation on the website for free, for the next couple of months, just to help out with the online promotion. I sincerely hope it does well. I think most people would really enjoy the film if given a chance. Once it starts appearing in theaters, the word-of-mouth will pick up again.

I thought that it was a comedy when I first saw the trailer...the whole audience was laughing. And you tell me it's a horror?

It's a comedy, a drama, and a horror film... no, not a horror film, a supernatural thriller (take that, Eli Roth!). It's really tough to slap just one label on Bubba Ho-tep. The horror-film elements -- the soul-sucking mummy, the giant scarab beetles -- are more along the lines of, say, '40s and '50s monster movies than modern-day splatter horror. In fact, the violence is very mild (it could play on prime-time TV with no edits) and I don't believe I saw a single drop of blood anywhere in the film. It's a really sweet-natured, human comedy with serious themes about life, death, regret, honor, and redemption. The mild horror elements drive the plot, but calling it any one thing (a comedy, a drama, or a horror film) would be selling Bubba Ho-tep short, I think.

... and the King and JFK battling a soul-sucking mummy. Forgetting that would be selling Bubba Ho-tep short, I think.
